Yes, we are strongly favoured by the gulf stream. Actually, the climate in northwest Germany is very similar to Vancouver or the lower Frazer valley, nearly same averages for winter and summer; but Vancouver is even slightly milder in winter due to the protection from the coast mountains. In Germany we sometimes get air from Northern Russia, and there is no mountain chain in between, so once in 20 years it can get down to about -22C (-8F) (which probably won't shock you).
