Realizing most of us rotate our song repertoire, as well as learn & add new tunes regularly, I'd love to hear what songs you're performing 'most often' right now. Here's mine: Current Core Repertoire Favorites: Beyond The Sea Girl From Ipanema I Left My Heart In SF/If You're Going to SF, Wear Flowers In The Misty Moonlight King Of The Road Moondance Rhinestone Cowboy Route 66 Save The Last Dance For Me Somewhere Over The Rainbow Sleepwalk Spanish Eyes Summer Samba Sunny Sway That's Life The Summer Wind Under The Boardwalk Witchcraft Wonderful Tonight You Can't Hurry Love Newly added/updated: Help Yourself (Tome Jones) Kiss Me Quick (Elvis Presley) Chain of Fools (Aretha Franklin) I'll Be Your Baby Tonight (Bob Dylan ala Curtis Stigers Style) I'm Yours (Jason Mraz) Light My Fire (Jose Feliciano quitar style) The Coffee Song (updated using: Hip Boogaloo Style) Teach Your Children (Crosby, Stills, Nash)

I've found the easiest way of doing this, at least for me, is via a combination of features, Music Finder Directory and Registrations--the MFD being the easiest and fastest. The MFD favorites list can be tailor-made to fit any venue, however, you can always revert to the primary list to comply with the wishes of those who want to request songs that are not on the favorites list. My current MFD master list is about 525 songs, while in registrations I have about 350 songs to select from. Lots of options to chose from. Gary

I've found the easiest way of doing this, at least for me, is via a combination of features, Music Finder Directory and Registrations Ditto +1 I utilize several custom self-created MFD database files each geared specifically for different venues. I basically started with the MFD included in the keyboard and then use Michael Bedesem's "MusicFinder View" to remove the songs I would never play, and create new song records that I actually 'do' play. My master MFD song list includes approx 1800 songs, some with alternate styles linked to them depending on the venue. I also utilize custom REGS for a few hundred of the songs that I'd consider my core repertoire and/or songs that require more custom settings that require REG stored settings & features: chords/lyrics file display, tempo change within a song, key modulation, medleys, etc. As Gar said: "Lots of options to chose from". Scott, Doesn't it depend on what type of event your playing at? Yes, but all the songs I included in my above list I'm able to play at any of my gigs, from NH, cocktail lounge hour, wedding events and mixed age group parties too. I'd obviously add a few more older chestnuts and more current hits for a younger crowd, and more dance tunes for a party event, but I think the songs in my list are pretty much cross generational, and can be easily altered to suit the venue & age group by simply utilizing a different style, groove and/or tempo. For example for a senior crowd or early evening cocktail lounge setting, I play "Sunny" as a laid back bossa, but later in the evening when the younger folks hit the dance floor, I'll bring up the tempo and switch to a disco-trance beat. I love the flexibility our auto-accompaniment arrangers offer. I'd love to see your lists tailored for each different venue. Ok, in addition to the above songs here are a few more my audiences enjoy, many of which the song arrangement can be tailored to the venue: Baby Face (trad swing for NH, and disco style for dance crowd) Making Whoopee (essential wedding gig novelty tune) Top Hat White Tie and Tails (great for cocktail hour) Misty (another cocktail hour staple) Up, Up and Away: (a 1960's Jimmy Web tune which has got some great chords) of which I'm working on as a big band style arrangement. Hawaiian Song Medley: Pearly Shells, Sweet Leilani, Lovely Hula Hands, Little Grass Shack; Tiny Bubbles, Hawaiian Wedding Song, etc. The older ladies esp appreciate this to fulfill their Don Ho fantasy Artist Medleys: Sinatra, Elvis, Hank Williams etc. Outdoor Party Events: Abracadabra; Rockin' Robin; Brown Eyed Girl; Green Onions; Sleepwalk; Mercy Mercy Mercy; Groovin; Stuck In The Middle With You; Under The Boardwalk, Save The Last Dance For Me; CCR Medley Novelty Fun: Beer Barrel Polka Medley; Mr. Sandman; You're 16; These Boots Are Made For Walking Contemporary Pop: I'm Yours; Bubbly; You're Beautiful; Earth Song I won't hesitate to include any of these tunes even at a NH venue as not only does the staff appreciate it, but the residents themselves also seem to enjoy it as keeps them feeling young and up to date with the current music. Interestingly enough, it's often now NH/Senior Care facility residents themselves that I get requested to play one of these. I'm now looking forward to hearing about what songs others here are including in their current repertoire including specific gig venue(s)

what would be really handy is what actual styles are you using for these songs
Hi Rikki, Most are Yamaha T4,T3, or T2 styles or Yamaha "premium" styles, or 3rd party custom 'song specific styles'. I'm merely listing the style names as was requested by Rikki to give everyone an idea of what styles I use, so please ' don't even ask me' to share/send any of these styles: That said: Beyond The Sea: (orchBigBand1) Girl From Ipanema: (pop bossa2);(3rd party songstyle) I Left My Heart In SF: (midnight swing);(3rd party songstyle) If You're Going to SF Wear Flowers: (Unplugged2);(3rd party songstyle) In The Misty Moonlight: (60's guitarpop) King Of The Road:(CountryShuffle);(3rd party songstyle) Moondance: (Manhattan Swing) Rhinestone Cowboy: (Country8beat);(3rd party songstyle) Route 66: (AcousticJazz);(PianoBoogie);(3rd party songstyle) Save The Last Dance For Me: (RhumbaIsland);(8BtGtrPop) Somewhere Over The Rainbow: (MovieBallad);(16BtBallad2) Sleepwalk: (3rd party songstyle) Spanish Eyes: (Bossa Gtr) Summer Samba: ((3rd party songstyle) Sunny:(bossanova2);(90's Disco);(3rd party songstyle) Sway: (Latin Sway) That's Life: (6-8 Blues) The Summer Wind: (Slowfox) Under The Boardwalk: (MemphisSoul);(Rhumba Island) Witchcraft: (OrchBigBand2) Wonderful Tonight: (PopGtrBallad);(3rd party songstyle) You Can't Hurry Love: (detroitpop1) Help Yourself: (3rd party songstyle) Kiss Me Quick: (3rd party songstyle) Chain of Fools: (3rd party songstyle) I'll Be Your Baby Tonight: (acousticjazz);(3rd party songstyle) I'm Yours: (3rd party songstyle) Light My Fire: (3rd party songstyle);(60'sUnderground) The Coffee Song: (Hip Boogaloo);(BigBandSamba) Teach Your Children: (Country Pop)

Hi Donny Nice to see your list and realize how many of the same songs (95%) we both cover. What I find interesting though is some of the keys you play(?) in, especially the songs in C# and F#. Do you 'actually play' them in those keys? If my optimal singing key is 'no more' than a 1/2 or whole step above/below the more typical piano keys (C,D,Eb,F,G,Ab,A,Bb), I'll opt to use transpose button.

Ian and DNJ: an important point I'd like to make when relying on the 'transpose button' to transpose more than 3 semi tones (> minor 3rd) away from the key you're actually playing in, is that it can dramatically alter (often negatively) the sound of your chords played & heard live), because when a chord played is voiced for the lower part of the keyboard, when transposed up/down too far, it can sound terrible , and the reason keyboard players typically play different chord voicings dependent on the key of a song,or the keyboard octave range the chords are being played. How a chord sounds has a lot to do with the harmonic overtone series, but that's another story. Hi Scott, Good points. I rarely use a left hand voice when in arranger mode...sometimes I might use a strings or organ voice, and no matter what key I'm in, I usually end up playing rootless voicings...probably from all those years of playing Hammond and Electone organs, especially when using bass pedals. As far as the transposer...I'm a very lazy guy...my technique is pretty good, and I play often enough in different keys to keep sharp. But, ultimately, I'm lazy, and I like playing in certain keys, especially for soloing, so I use the transposer quite a bit. The "keyboard capo" I call it. One of the best features ever added, in my opinion. Ian the Indolent

No transposer for me...keeps your chops sharp!
R. Use the transpose and keep your vocal chops sharp. Gary And save your vocal chords! So true--so true! You would be amazed at the number of singers that sing well above their range because they cannot play a song in any key other than what it was written in. Consequently, they are straining to hit those higher notes, and when they cannot they tend to scream, while at the same time pull the mic away so no one will hear the God awful sounds they just emitted. I don't recall who made the statement but it was someone on the Synthzone that said: "Never play a song you intend to sing in a key that is outside your Singing Comfort Zone." Made perfectly good sense to me. Cheers, Gary

No transposer for me...keeps your chops sharp! R. Yep, I do remember those tediously challenging music class assignments of having to learn & play an assigned tune in all 12 keys plus turnin' in papers with them fully transcribed and handwritten in 12 keys too. It's a relief not to have to go thru that now. Those were the days no longer. And because in addition to the most popular guitar sharp keys (E,A,D,G), I especially enjoy working with horn players, so over the years have developed a fondness for their favored flat keys (F, Bb, Eb and Ab) and which seem to more often than not, best suit my voice as well. In addition to 'C', having these 8 keys under your belt will serve you well both on and off the bandstand. Keep in mind that musicians (esp horn players) without a convenient automated transpose option (transpose button or guitar capo) can't easily transpose on the fly to a key like C# or F# and won't appreciate a singer or piano player coming on stage and calling out "Crazy" in C#. If I'm working with a pick up band, I've got enough latitude in my singing to call the tune in C or D instead, and believe me, the band will certainly appreciate that and calling you back to sing/play with them again more too.

What I meant to say is, I play the tune in the key it was written in if I am sight reading it. If I'm going to sing it., I learn it in the proper key. I don't use the transpose button for any performances.
R. So Russ, if a song is written in a key that's not in your vocal range, and you are sight reading it, how do you sing it, or is it then a tune that is not (or cannot be) a part of your vocal repertoire? Wouldn't a transposer give you more choices for tunes? Do you ever use a capo on your guitar? Ian

No, I don't use a capo...EVER! If I played acoustic (folk, country chords or finger style, for example) and wanted to use strong open note bass lines, maybe. But I don't. That's what power chords are used for with my style of playing.
I don't ever sight read material I do in real time performances where I am featured. If the tune is written in the wrong key for me, I quickly transpose it into the right key when I learn it. I generally always play instrumentals in the key they are written in.
I don't use a laptop, charts, etc. or anything but memory for the material I do live. I play lots of variations on lead lines extemporaneously, when possible. If I'm playing in a group, I play the chart supplied when everything is charted.
Other times, in more improvisational performances (both as an individual and as a member of a group), tradition dictates that tunes are played in conventional horn keys (out of respect for the player(s)and appreciation of the limitations/range/fingering of the instrument) or in the keys they were written in. Competent players know what those keys are, and can handle most material in any key called. Often. modulations are used just to keep things interesting.
I just prefer to do things my way.
This is not an assertion that mine is the right way for anyone else. It's the right way for me and others I know and work with.
And, frankly, I'm surprised that anyone would even ask the "capo" question to someone who plays my style of guitar.
My guitar posting from several months ago contained tunes in 5 or 6 different keys; only one in an "open" key...no capo. It would have been no problem playing all those pieces in any key. That's what I do for practice. The choices were either arbitrary or to suit my vocal range. I'd bet that no-one EVER saw anyone play any of those tunes using a capo.
But that's as much a function of musical style than anything else. I've seen Tommy Emmanuel and Chet Atkins use capo's when playing their "finger picking" kind of material.
Love them both, but a capo is not appropriate for my style. Jazz player are insulted at the "capo" question. I don't even own one. And, as a matter of personal discipline, I choose not to use the transposition button on keyboards.
But, keep in mind, this is coming from a guy who never touches a volume or tone control knob on a stringed instrument. All the pots are corroded wide open and don't work (LOL).
Russ

Doing things your own way ...that's a good thing Russ...there's a song about that, isn't there? I'm still learning at 62 years old...and, I'm lucky enough to have people around me who share their knowledge, and who sometimes are able to use mine. I'm not very familiar with your "style" of guitar...I play a lot of folk and a fair amount of classical (nylon string), but I'm pretty rusty nowadays, ever since my "new love", the arranger (in my case a Yamaha Tyros4) has slowly won over my time and my heart. [Sings]... For what is a man what has he got If not himself then he has not To say the things he truly feelsAnd not the words of one who kneelsThe record shows I took the blows And did it my way. Yes, it was my way. Keep doing it your way, my friend. Ian

Hi Scott. Tying in 'most requested' and 'changing trends' it's a bit odd that old chestnuts like Jambalaya, Let It Be Me, Mustang Sally, Rescue Me, and Kansas City seem to be requested more often, so I don't know that trends really are changing that much. Maybe, after 30-40 years of playing those, we've got them in decent shape:D.
Our audiences, regardless of age, excluding the under-30 crowd, seem to like anything from the past 50 years. That's certainly something that couldn't be said of my generation when we came along.
Even the 'newest' songs we do are hardly up to the minute - Movin' On Up by M People, Hungry Like the Wolf by Duran Duran and Can't Get You Outta My Head by Kylie Minogue are, what, 15-20 years old now. But, in the main, we're still doing songs we did years and years ago, and people still love 'em. Maybe oldie radio stations have something to answer for, but it's more that people are comfortable with the familiar. And if that's what they want to hear, who am I to argue that?
Like most of us on the forum, we aim at having something for everyone. An impossible task really, but we get close.
On personal favourites, and we like them all really, or else we wouldn't be doing them, hmmm let me see:
Till I Am Myself Again - Blue Rodeo (good country rock) Flip, Flop and Fly - Downchild Blues Band (swingin' little number) Riders on the Storm - Doors (weird wind and elastic guitars, plus a good Wurly EP) Hungry Like the Wolf - Duran Duran (more effects craziness in the break) I'm Not In Love - 10cc (for the harmonies) Hollywood Waltz - Eagles (pretty tune) Rudy's In Love - (a one hit wonder UK reggae band, I just like it)
That's a few off the top of my head but, like I said, I love 'em all.
Cheers, 124

Flip, Flop and Fly - Downchild Blues Band. Man I know I'm gettin' old. I remember when Big Joe Turner brought this out in 1966. I saw him perform it live a couple years later in Baltimore, I believe it was at the "Mardis Gras," which back in those days featured all the big name performers, Sinatra, Little Richard, Deane Martin, Perry Como and a host of others. Some neat lists, Gary

Hi Al, shock horror, I'm seriously considering a Yamaha again. As much as I luv the Korg & it's style creation functions, I do prefer Yamaha styles. Worse still I had the problem of the rather expensive replacement of the LCD screen on the PA800, and now I've just noticed something has gone wrong with a couple of the sounds. Still more than playable, but starting to wonder about reliability. Had seriously been condering PA3X, now I'm not so sure. Don't know if hubby's generosity will quite extend to a T4 ( retail price of over $7 K in Australia, but can probably be bought a bit cheaper with discount) or I'll possibly have to settle for a PSRs910 at way less than half the price. Maybe I'll get more playing done with a Yammie, instead of having to spend time converting psr to Korg haahaa Now that would be novel. Well, welcome back! It's good to take a break from music from time to time. I actually took a break from keyboards for a while while my tendonitis healed. I was playing so much that errors in my technique were hurting me. So I corrected that and now I'm back with a vengeance. I'm doing some solo work, playing keys in a Wedding band and I'm an 1st Call drummer with a few bands; Whew plus I work full time. Talk about a full life! I gave up on the Korg's due to the quirky style .set files and dated sounds and went for the Tyros4 which really suits the type of music i'm playing much more. Those natural and acoustic sounds and the Super Articulation are really to die for. Good luck with your decision on what to get. You really have some wonderful choices out there. Hi Al, I haven't been around for a few months. Had a bit of a musical break. Got offered a new keyboard the other day ( to get me out of the doldrums), so now I have the problem of deciding what to get, if anything. Descisions Decisions haahaa.
A lot of the songs you & Scott play really appeal to me. I luv the old 40'50's type music.
