About 20 years ago our band was booked to play at a cc in Grand Rapids, Mi. We got all set up and went to the bar to BUY a drink. We didn't expect anything free. The bartender told us we couldn't get a drink there because we weren't members. The band leader said if we aren't good enough to drink there we aren't good enough to play there. We started to pack up and leave. One of the members who followed our band for years asked what we were doing and our band leader told him. He went right to the bar and said whatever these boys want give them and put it on my tab.
