It only takes a few mouse clicks to convert an XF MIDI File into a professionally formatted Fake Book Lead Sheet with the Chord Symbols.

Any MIDI File that you record on a Yamaha Arranger Keyboard is automatically saved in the Yamaha XF format which is an extension of the Standard MIDI File format.

The XF Format includes the Chords that are used to drive the auto-accompaniment styles. Small SysEx message are used to embed the Chord information as Chord Meta Events.

Notation Composer 4 is one of the few Music Notation programs that can read and write Yamaha XF Files.

You can open any XF MIDI File into Notation Composer 4 and see the Chord Symbols on the Score sheet. This Chord information is retained when you export to the MusicXML format.

You can open this MusicXML file in Musescore and use its advanced formatting tools to output a beautiful PDF Fake Book Lead Sheet.

Here is my 99-page Guide that walks you through the entire process.

FakeBook.zip includes a sample XF MIDI File recorded on the Yamaha Genos 2 and the final Lead Sheets processed with MuseScore.

Best regards,

David

Hi Ron,

I am glad you liked it!

I threw in an XF MIDI file in my tutorial containing every Major, Minor and Dominant 7th Chords in all keys.

I played the blocked chords with my left hand to drive the Style while I played the arpeggiated version of the chords with my right hand.

I wanted to show how Notation Composer faithfully picks up all the left hand chords and passes them into the exported MusicXML file.

If I were to open the XF MIDI file directly in MuseScore, the Chord Symbols would not show up since it does not recognize the Chord Meta Events.

This is where Notation Composer comes to the rescue. It extracts the Meta Chord Events and writes them to the MusicXML file which can subsequently be read by MuseScore.

Hate to say it, but anything supposedly that needs 'just a few mouse clicks' but needs a 99 page tutorial is perhaps more complicated than you make out! 😂🎹🤣

Ha! I hear you Diki.

I intentionally added a lot of graphics and descriptive text to make it as easy as a children’s coloring book. This is useful to a complete beginner who has never opened Notation Composer or MuseScore.

However, once someone takes the time to go through one cycle to understand the conversion process subsequent conversions become a simple repetitive task.

The bulk of the conversion of extracting the Meta Chord Events happens behind the scenes within Notation Composer. This saves a lot of time from having to manually insert the Chords. Now that would have required a ton of mouse clicks!
