Hi!

I just found out why styleworks could read those commercial composer diskettes but not those homemade diskettes.

Check your disk, if it is HD, the computer can't read it, because it will think it is a HD format diskette and tries to read it in HD format.

Because the older technics models disk drive is a DD drive, all diskettes used in those keyboeards are in DD format.

Solution: cover the hole on the right side of the diskette with some tape ( DD format does not have that hole ) and voila! EMC could reaad all of my diskettes with no problem!

Hi Blackamoor,

You bring up an interesting point but strangely enough, years ago, I had a KN1000 and it would take HD floppys as well as DD. In that case, wouldn't they be readable?

Intrestingly yes, the keyboard WILL take HD diskettes too. All my diskettes are HD.

But the keyboard does not format it to HD format, only in DD format. And thats the reason computers cannot read disk.

Because the disk has the HD hole, computer assumes it is a HD diskette and tries to read it in normal way. But it can't be read that way. So covering the hole tells the disk drive to read it in DD format.

I was offered a technics kn 901 and a KN 5000.

Which would be better? and can the read my song diskettes?

http://home.c2i.net/gjgotaas/ click on 'Technical' in the index, then 'About the KN Files and what they do', then on KN2000 and read.

The 5000 is miles better than the 901 which was probably the worst Technics ever released.

Sorry, forgot to mention that i have kn750, and a lot of songs made in it. And i would like to know if i could use my disks in kn5000? directly?

Or if I use EMC style works, and convert the cmp files, I probably could, BUT how about the .seq files, which contain my song data? Would they work alltogether? Because styleworks don't convert sequence files, only cmp files.

If that isn't possible, could i connect the kn750 and kn 5000 together and feed the song data via midi to the kn5000 by playing back the song in kn750?

The KN5000 had a style converter disk supplied which will convert KN750 composers so you don't actually need EMC for this particular job.

Sequences: the easiest method would be to re-save the songs in a KN1000 if you can find someone who still has one and will do it for you. The next step would be to resave the 1000 format in a KN2000. That should be fine into a 5000. I resaved songs from 800 to 1000 to 2000 to 3000 to 5000 etc etc and they came out ok with minor tweaking. That would be far simpler than midi recording and remapping the drums even if program change data and drums sounds could actually be output in the first place which could be a hurdle.

Hi Technicsplayer,

I hope this reply doesn't get lost in this post. I have several songs done on an old KN1000 using SEQUENCER. Is there any way I can get these to come up in the KN7000 without using a KN2000? I can bring up the COMPOSER parts from the KN1000 using the Style Convert Disk but I don't see anything in SEQUENCER. It seems that if the COMPOSER parts can be brought up, why not what was done in SEQUENCER?

yes, EMC do a pc song converter for the old formats. The 1000 was a non-GM 8 track machine with a max capacity of 6600 notes. The 2000 was a GM compatible 16 track sequencer with 19000 note capacity, the mapping is therefore quite different. It would depend firstly if the software code would fit on a floppy and secondly whether the data could be channelled with enough processing power and memory left over while the software block is in ram for a large song.
