My singer wanted to try a tip jar at our wkly restaurant gig. I reluctantly said I would try to make something with a musical theme. I decorated a mason jar with sheet music and found an electric tea candle at the dollar store.

After the job she said we had $65. Several 20's a few 5s and a lot of singles. Not bad for playing a few request.

Needless to say I am now in favor of the jar.

Agreed. To that list I would add Private Parties, Country Clubs. And definitely no tips at Benefits.
Restaurants and bars - OK.
At a local Elks I had people lay tips on my KB as I was playing, so I put out a little basket on a table next to me and baited it with a couple of bucks. No TIP sign. Just a baited basket to let them know where to put tips if they were so inclined. Always a nod of the head if playing or thank you when anything is put into the basket.

I just have a jar and put a 20 in it for bait. Nothing at private parties or benefits of course. However I sometimes lay a bill or two on my keyboard stand just in case they want to know where to leave something. smile
I used to have a printed paper that I taped to the jar that said "Needy Musician's Fund".
Notice the "Musician's" was singular.

some will tip you personally for playing "THEIR" song when asked....others just appreciate good music and drop some bills in the jar,....but I always made sure I got paid what I needed first so that tips or not I go home happy and don't feel cheap..

Believe it or not, I've found that the bigger the bait, the bigger the fish I catch. smile

Never used a tip jar...it's just not me. Found $5.00 bills (and old cigars...UGH) in my half-drunk glass of rum and coke many times.

NASTY!

Went to a place last night with an outdoor stage. Pretty good band that the owner loved and could only book once a month . He gets on the mic and announces that anyone who puts a five in their bucket gets a free shot.
I guess he really wants them back !

That's a great thing for him to do!
A couple of weeks ago, we had a birthday party of about 10 people. They were having a LARGE time stayed from 7:00 to closing.
The Birthday "girl" came up in the middle of a song and before I could stop her, grabbed my jar and started going around to the tables with it. Not cool, but dang, she was having so much fun than most everybody dug in and contributed. By the end of the night there was more than four h in it. I played the entire four hours with only one break, then another 30 minutes extra. You don't mind working hard if people are appreciating it!

Good for you Don like you said you'll work your butt off if it's appreciated. Had a similar thing this Spring sitting in with a band. Guitar player was on and ego trip and didn't want to do any requests. Finally ath the end of the gig we hit Mustanf Sally which lots of musicians hate but a girl grabbed out tip pitcher and replaced it with a bucket. $$$

I have a regular who is the owner of a soft drink distributorship and a major drunk. for three years, he has been coming in on Wednesday evening, laying a $100.00 bill on my piano and asking me to ply his song. He staggers to a booth. 1/2 hour later, he says," when are you going to play my song?" I say, "Bill, I played it when you first came in". He says, "Thanks buddy", and staggers off.

Been so long, I don';t even remember what the song is.

What the heck does he expect for $15,000.00?(LOL).

Russ
