The power supply of my Musicpad Pro gave out the other and had a spare sent by the company some years ago. The original was 12v 4.3a. The replacement was 12v 3.5a. I didn't notice the amperage being lower, and the MPP overheated and shut off.

I tried a 17v 5a powerpak and it works fine without even getting warm. I know the amps is no problem, but what about the increased voltage ?

Bernie,

Check out the specifications of the Musicpad Pro. Some have an operating range, and that 17.5-volt power supply may exceed that range. However, if it falls within the range, which is usually 12 to 20-VDC, then you should be safe.

Good Luck,

Gary cool

Thanks Gary

It has been running three hours or so and is cool and operates normally.

Can I assume(dangerous term) that problems should show up by now ?

At any rate, I ordered an Ipad, so it will not be a crushing event if it does go down.

Hi Bernie,

The important figure for DC power supplies is the voltage. It MUST match the device, or it will blow the power rails. Also be mindful of the tip polarity.

Some are centre + and sleeve - OR centre - and sleeve + . This is also important.

As long as the rated amp output is HIGHER than what the device needs you will have no probs, as it only draws enough current (amps) that it needs/uses.

Oh oh, this not the case. The voltage is higher, but seems to be fine, and the tip fits. I am not sure whether to chance it now, but it has been fine for hours.

Well you really should NOT use a voltage that is higher.....even if it works short term. The DC circuits have caps and diodes designed for a specific rating...if the manufacturer uses high quality components you can have some leeway, as better "spec'd" components have higher degrees of tolerances. IE the voltage for example can be +/- up to .5 to 1.9 of a volt and they can cope with it..Cheaper components overheat (not discernible on the outside casing) and then fail...usually after the device has been turned off, and then restarted.

You may be lucky, but with something as important as your gig charts reader, personally, I would not be taking ANY chances at all!!

Although as you say you have ordered an iPad ( GREAT decision wink ) so it is probably academic anyway smile

Definitely match the voltage. Get the same or higher amperage rating as close to the original as you can find. There will be some frying at higher voltage you may not notice immediately. i didn't get the name Sparky for nothing....

Thank you all for your help. I found the proper powerpak after an exhaustive search, If I haven't already fried it.
