I've also owned the Crown CM311A for 2 1/2 years, and I'm extremely happy with it.

I am also happy with many of Gary's settings. I've tweaked them a bit for my vocals.

Can you compare the crown CM311A in terms of quality of sound to a Shure Beta 58 A?

Shure makes the Beta 54 headset microphone. Has anybody tried it?

Though I have not tried the 58A yet, the CM-311-A is equal to the Sennheiser 855e and the SM58. As for the Shure 54 headset mic, I have only talked with someone that had one, and he said he wished he had purchased the CM-311-A instead.

You know I love ya, but I think the Crown sounds totally different from those mics you mentioned. Proximity effect aside, they have comepletely different tone colors. The Senheiser and the Shure don't even sound like they are on the same block.

I know you like the headset design, but c'mon ....... these three mics are apples, oranges and grapefruits !

I don't agree Dave, and neither does anyone who listened to the post I made several months ago when I performed several songs using the Sennheiser 855E and Crown CM-311-A. No one knew which mic was which until after their evaluation. Most everyone thought the Crown was actually the Sennheiser. Those of us that use headset mics were equally astonished at the results. Don't go by the specification sheets--evaluate them by recording something, then listening carefully to it. It works for me!

Gary, the Crown might sound like the Sennheiser, but the Sennheiser doesn't sound like the SM58. They are way apart. I have to change my settings dramatically when I change from SM58 to the 855.
Basically the 855 sounds much like the Shure SM87, a much more expensive and responsive mic, and I e.q. them much the same. In fact neither needs much e.q. at all.
I also use a Samson R11 some, and, because of the tremendous amount of proximity effect, almost all the bass must be rolled off.

I only change the "LOW" sometimes depending on the room characteristics when I do a sound check, due to Rugs, Curtains, Tile, etc etc.....
