Sounds involved, but you can get a very inexpensive adapter that will allow you to connect the laptop drive right TO the desktop . Of course, this requires you to take the drive OUT of the laptop first.

Another option is an external drive to use as a transfer device like i do. I have a USB 20GB drive that fits in the palm of your hand, and requires NO a/c power. That's my reccomendation. Check eBay ... I paid about $125 for it .... and I lOVE it !

Hi Dnj,

Just use a RJ45 ethernet crossover cable. I assume that you have a built-in ethernet adapter in your laptop and an ethernet card in your desktop PC. You can also use a hub.

A second alternative is to use USB to USB.
Let me know if you need more details...

(I HAD to try this....)

I know neither my laptop nor my desktop has ethernet built in. Maybe that is not as easy a fix for everyone? My old Macs had ethernet, but none of my PC's do.

Wizboy: How does the 'USB to USB' method work? You mean you can connect your laptop 'directly' to your desktop PC via USB cable? Currently I have to save my MP3s to zip disk to transfer, so a direct 2 way file transfer connection would be cool. Please explain the setup procedures. Thanks. - Scott

Yeah - that USB method sounds promising too. Can you just connect the two PC's and each will recogize each other as a "letter" drive? Is that possible? What about endless transmission loops?

Dave ,

I'm hoping for a USB back and forth hook up too just like you mentioned. this would also eleiminate burning mp3 files to a CD first then uploading them to the laptop. Someone please say yes to that, or?

Yes you can hook up from your PC to your laptop directly via USB. What you need is a USB PC to PC LINK CABLE. There might also be a PC to MAC USB Link Cable available as well.
This goes for about $29 and transfers at around 4 to 8 Mbps. The cable comes with 2000/XP compatible driver and a windows program manager. The program will display one window for the local computer and another one for the remote machine.
For everyone that is already familiar with explorer, all you have to do is drag and drop files from one window to another. That's it !

It's kinda like Laplink in the old days wheere you can transfer via serial or parallel ports but only this time, it's plug and play !

Wizboy: AWESOME! Many Thanks! I assume you can link up two desktop computers up together the same way, right?
