Hey gang,
I posted a full cut version (sorry dial uppers)of a new vocal piece I've done and I need an opion about the backup singing. I am undecided whether I like what I have done for the backup or not.

So anyone who ventures a listen I'd appreciate your feedback. Current work page, the tune is called "Moonlight or Roses"
thanks....

Terry,

Love the song--it really sounds great, good style, lots of feeling. The vocal levels seem a bit light and possibly should come up about 15 percent because your voice is being overwhelmed by the music.

Which vocalizer are you using for the harmonies? It really sounds good.

Looking good mon'

Gary

Terry,

The vocal sounds very nice. It goes well with the piece. I would agree that the level is a bit low but not all of it. Perhaps just a touch of compression / limiting effect would do just the trick. Sometimes when I've done vocals I've added a little and it makes a difference. If you're dead set against limiting effects, another method to use is to analyze the waveform in your audio program. N track allows me to identify low spots and raise the levels in those areas. I haven't worked much with Sonar ( for audio )but I would imagine that there is a similar function.

The ability that you possess to create spontaneously is a gift, and one that I wish I had a little more of myself. Maybe it's partially a matter of focus, but there is talent involved too to be sure.

Cheers,

AJ

Moonlight and Roses, easy going, nice smooth flow, good melody. I liked the blend of vocals and music. I especially liked the concept of Terry and Terry.

Terry,

Nice job on Monnlight & Roses. I agree with Gary on boosting the lead Vocals a bit. I also like the lyric hook of
"Suppose is....Roses"

Carry on & Jam on

Thanks all you guys and I'll leave it the way it is, except to boost the vocals a bit.

Gary....no harmonizer used on the piece just me singing behind me. I do run my vocals through a tc electronics G Force though for the reverb and a touch of chorus.

Appreciate the input.

hello Terry

i dont post much here but i'm one of those singer and guitar players lurking in the shadows as Uncle Dave says.

i've listened to your song and also a little while back to the song you dedicated to Uncle Dave. both songs are great, nice melody and this last song i really enjoyed the hook with roses very nice effect. the vocal-dueling is very effective too.

my beef with these 2 recordings is that you bury your voice in the mix. in a song i want to hear your voice clearly and the words.

i must say you are very prolific! great music. thanks for sharing

Simon

Simon,
Thanks for the kind words. Perhaps since you all agree on the vocals being too low it's a subconcious lack of confidence in my vocal abilities.

Terry,
I've heard a "comfort" level in your vocal pieces before, and I'm sure that you have enough confidence to keep singing. Sometimes, when we get something new .....(Tyros?) your own ear "wants" to hear that new thing and we subconsciously pump up the "fresh new sound". I notice that in some of my recordings ..... if I'm playing a Hammond or a Rhodes sound that I really get into ... I tend to let them take the lead position.
I have only one small comment on the vocal duels: since the range and tone is so closely matched, why not try to EQ the second voice so there is a more distinct "entrance" when it chimes in. Maybe cut the bass or boost the upper mids .... something to differenciate it from the lead voice.
I'd also do less unison and more separated harmonies....but that's just me. I want to hear the Four Freshman on everything.
(With the Tower of Power backing them !)

Dave,
Thanks and good input. I think what will eventually happen with the vocal cd I am working on is I am stalling long enough for the Vocieworks to get in and then I will re record all the vocals on all the pieces.
