Just curious...most of us (you guys) either reside in Calif (Scott, Bebob, Terry, George, etc) or East Coast (I think U.D, etc..)

Anybody in Portland? Just curious...

Rome, Italy. Quite a bit of cold wind today (very unusual here, where the winter is almost over by mid-February).
Bill, I hope that you were wearing a coat while watering your lawn.

Hoogeveen, Drenthe, The Netherlands. About 40 km to the west of Roel.

And the weather for today:
Today we have overcast clouds, still dry but the rain can fall any moment. No sun today. Temperatures around 10 degrees ºC and seem to be stable during the rest of the week.

Donny ....My house is bigger than that

Actually, Lancaster Castle is owned by The Queen. It has been used for a number of years as a prison but the lease runs out in a couple of years. Technically she could move in and use it herself but somehow I don't think she has the same taste in decor as the current occupants

I'm from Santa Barbara, California, up the road a piece (about 35 miles north) of Eric B. Met Eric through this forum, also Andrea when he was in the States last year. Looking forward to meeting Scott Yee in February when he pays a visit to Southern California.

My wife, who is Dutch, is visiting her mother and other family memebers in the Netherlands at this time. (She's from Haarlem, about 10 miles west of Amsterdam.) Unfortunately the weather there is nothing like we're having here the past few days. Our weather here currently is actually nicer than our typical summer weather. But we could use a bit more rain soon.

My daughter is leaving for Spain to attend a University in Madrid for 4 months next week. She is a UCLA student and is going with a group of University of California students. What is the weather like in Madrid this time of year? I noticed a response from one of our synthzone members from Spain. Any suggestion of things to do or to not do while a 20 year old is in Madrid?

George,

I'm not spanish nor I live in Spain, but Madrid is closer from here (3/4 hours drive) than the portuguese capital (Lisbon). I've been there several times and I had some collegues of work that were based in Madrid universities (Complutense & Antónoma).
The weather is quite continental: hot in the summer and rather cold in winter. A month ago, the main roads to Madrid were blocked with snow...

She will enjoy Madrid, even more if she is an outgoing person. Madrid's night life, called "La Movida" is very famous and has its peak in the summer warm nights. She will also enjoy the cultural offer over there; lots of things happening at all times of the year.

There are also some very interesting one/two-day tours around Madrid, specialy if she likes historic towns.

My daughter has had 4 years of high school spanish and 2 years of college spanish, so although she speaks spanish well in an English environment, she will have a lot to learn when she arrives in Madrid. Thanks for the reports of how things are in Madrid.

Pensacola, Florida. Where we had a high today around 50 degrees, much warmer than Friday morning when it was 4 degrees with north wind chill. Water pipes froze in some places. I guess they insulate a little different than Jefferson, Wisconsin where I come from.

Also, you should have seen the mess people made by turning on their sprinler systems to keep the grass from freezing and dying. There grass was frozen solid. Looks like new sod in the spring. Some places had stalagmites (icicles going up from the ground) where they had splashed through the night! Yes, only in Florida.

I'm in the small town of Tazewell, Virginia USA (the county seat of Tazewell County). The north side of the county is coal mine country. The south side is farming. I don't mean to brag but this is a beautiful part of the USA. Here are two web sites if you want to know a little bit more about this area.

I live in Sunny So. California as some of you know by now. To narrow it down further: San Diego North County. I am a 3rd generation Native and I would find it hard to live anywhere else quite frankly. You know what they say about San Diego and vicinity; that it has the BEST climate in the WORLD. The Pacific Ocean, Snow-capped Mountains: Okay Okay "in winter"'sometimes', Desert, our neighbors to the south, ie., Mexico, and Pristine Valleys, all within a short driving distance of each other. And did I mention Sun The only black eye this area has IMO is the traffic grid-lock we have on our Freeways. (Not as bad as L.A. though which lies around 100 miles north of here.)

PS: Scott, did you attend UC Berkeley? If you did you will have to include yourself of course in your statement.

Best regards,
Mike

ARJ lives 3 miles from the geographical center of the "lower peninsula" of Michigan, that beautiful "Water Wonderland." Alma, Michigan, is the place to be, if you are a guy like me. Outdoorsman is the name of the game around here. Best wishes to all. ARJ

What a great idea it was to ask where we live!
I now have a more intimate understanding of the friends who make up this forum.
It seems that most of the members are in USA but I can live with that!
I am from Rotherham in Yorkshire,England and have lived here for all of my 70 years. Don't want to live anywhere else, and I bet most of us have the same opinion about our birthplace.
We have here in UK a lot of admiration for the USA because you brought us (mainly through the Film Industry)a wonderment of the American life and customs and I for one have appreciated the music and entertainment you brought us.
To hear a song titled "I left my heart in San Fransisco" comes easily to our ears but I wonder if a song titled " I left my Heart in Rotherham" would have the same pzazz?
Anyway, Rotherham to me is the place where I feel at home in spite of the weather.
(But secretly, I would love the opportunity of living for a while in San Fransisco!)
cheers
Eddie

I agree with Eddie from Rotherham. Great to see where everyone is from and know we all share the same interests.

Home for me is in S. Florida on the East Coast near West Palm Beach. The area is nick-named "The Treasure Coast" in recognition of all the treasure found on sunken ships off our shoreline. And, no, I have never found any.

As posted earlier "Don't want to live anywhere else, and I bet most of us have the same opinion about our birthplace."

It's great to see where everyone lives, and that someone on the forum is older than myself. There is, however, a place where I've been trying to convince my wife to move for the past quarter century--the lower Florida Keys. She just left to go to work and drove 12 miles through a mix of freezing rain, snow and sleet. By the time she will be ready to return home, the temperature will be in the mid 20s, the snow will be a couple inches deeper and believe me when I say she will not be in a good mood.

I'm still trying to convince her that snow white sand, palm trees, turquoise colored water, great fishing and me playing Jimmy Buffer music in a bar is the only way to live. This is especially true when formal attire is new boat shoes or sandles, clean shorts, a Hawiaan shirt and sun glasses. Oh Yeah!

I born in New Orleans Louisiana but I left when I was 32. I now live on the Western Slope of the Rocky Mountains, near Grand Junction Colorado in a small town called Fruita.

Not much snow here in the valley but in about an hour's drive. I'm at a ski resort called Powderhorn in the neighborhood of 8000 to 10000 feet on the Grand Mesa. It is the largest flatop mountain in the world.

Most of the area for hundres of miles around here looks like the red rock mountain stuff you see in the old western movies.

Not bragging. I just mention this because it is a beautiful area to see. Most people get to Denver and stop. But they are missing a lot by not driving over the mountains to the western slope.

Life is pretty comfortable here in Southern California but I also like living in Australia except that the economy there makes it tough.

I live in New Mexico, and verify that Catsailors comment about it being in the USA is warranted. I was recently quoted international shipping rates by someone on the east coast. The weather here has allowed golf in shirt sleeves the past two weeks, but we would rather that not too many more people find out about that.

Hi Lanny,

I'm just a wee bit down the road from you in Edgewood. I once had another sailor ask me why I was in the US Navy! I told him it was a cultural exchange program. Also, I was in a pizza joint in Florida and asked a waiter if they would take a check. He asked where I was from, I told him, and he said he would have to check with the manager. When he came back he asked if we were still fighting the Indians. Boy, did I have fun with him! Ah, what a state!

Hi,
Are you looking in a mirror?
The last time I looked at a map Kent was in the right hand corner
Mind you If I look out of my window now you really ARE in the left hand corner.
Or is it just a wonderful mirage.

cheers

Hi Everybody
I live in Switzerland, near Zurich Airport. Am I the only Swiss here? Currently we have 20cm snow (happens only every few years in the area of Zurich). This thread was an excellent idea: astonishing where you guys all live! Despite of living in a nice country I almost get a bit jalous and nostalgic when I read names like Tucson, Phoenix, Grand Junction, Scottsdale, because they remember me of my first holiday trip to USA - landscapes I'll never forget...sigh

why are you always so elusive about yourself?
Do you realize you are the only one not to have disclosed where you live?
