If he's completely off base and takes a post and twists it into something it's not (which he does a lot), just don't reply to him. I agree with some of his remarks and not on others. I do however agree with him on the distortion issue. When you learn to play guitar you'll learn to enjoy those effects. It's not just a rocker or metal head effect. It's used in other music (Like Blues), and it really beefs up a solo.
