From Roland's "glossary of terms"

Pattern - A short musical passage recorded as MIDI data.

Style - A musical passage that can contain all of the elements of a musical arrangement and can be played as a single object.

---------
As I understand it, a pattern is series of midi events (making up a short musical passage) recorded on a single track. A style is a set of patterns (containing all the elements of a musical arrangement - i.e. different instruments playing together as accompaniment) recorded on multiple tracks.

Anyone more knowledgeable than I can feel free to correct me, or expound on my attempt at an explanation.

Charles

There is more flexibility with styles on an arranger:
If you are singing or accompaning a singer and they start 1 measure late - no problem.
If they want to restart a verse - no problem.
If they want to sing the chorus twice - no problem.
You can't do any of this with a pattern or a MIDI file (unless you have marks at strategic spots)

A pattern is usually a short phrase containing drums, and sometimes bass,,it is looped to run continuously.
A style is much more composed with multiple parts ..usually eight parts..it consist of looped and one shot sections, combined to make a style..A style can replace a pattern, but a pattern can't match a style..
