Hello José,
Many many opinions and views exist about these two keyboards.
Please use the 'search' feature on this forum and you'll find lots of threads where pro's and cons are discussed.

My advise is : Let your ears decide what to do, don't let it depend on other's opinions.

Visit a dealer that has both and can show you around.

Roel

PS If you would ask me :TYROS wins and is miles ahead in weight/styles/sounds/musical-feel.

Hi Zé
Why not Korg PA1X?

Eu tenho o PA1X (61 keys) desde Julho do ano passado e a minha opinião é muito boa. Para mim neste momento é a melhor do mundo.

I have the PA1X since 2004 July and my opinion is very good. Nowadays, Pa1X is the best in the world.

Jose, I don't know if price is a consideration for you or not, but my Yamaha Tyros cost me $2,400 (back when it first was introduced in Nov 2002). The Roland G70 lists for $4,999, and none of the Roland CK dealers (traditional piano/organ stores) in my area (San Francisco) are willing to budge on that ridulously high price. My guess is that the dealer cost for the G70 is somewhere around $2,500 (or less) which comes to a 100% dealer profit . . . highway robbery in my book. I hate to say this but traditional piano/organ store dealers have a distinct reputation among those in the know for asking huge profit margins, perhaps because they don't turn their merchandise around very quickly (and in high volume) as the MI Music Stores (Guitar Center, Sam Ash, etc) do. I only wish Roland would once again open up sales of the Roland G70 in MI music stores again (Guitar Center, etc). I feel that the death & demise of Technics arranger keyboards here in the US was due to fact that they could only be purchased thru the high keyboard markup tradition piano/organ stores. Just my opinion of course.

In the meantime, I'm a remain a very satisfied Yamaha Tyros player.

Scott

Andrea

Josè
I have a Tyros and on my website you can listen to demo's recorded live (which means that I recorded just one track, without overdubbings).
I live in Italy but like brazilian music a lot; on this site there are many portuguese and I hope that our friend Josè Matias will chime in (he too has a Tyros).

Hi José,

I will say the same as Roel: "My advise is : Let your ears decide what to do, don't let it depend on other's opinions."

Now you have probably heard some Tyros demos at Andrea rotolo's website.

I think think Andrea's Tyros demos are great! However I don't think the Tyros sound is better than the Roland G-70, but that's just my personal humble opinion. There is no truthful answer. It depends 100% on your preferences.

If you would like to hear how the Roland G-70 sounds when played by "ordinary" people, you can download user demos at this website.
www.selskabsmusikeren.dk

That is a Roland G-70 User Club. You have to register, log in and then press the download menu item.

Good luck on deciding which keyboard is the best for you! ;-)

It would be difficult to top the Tyros when it comes to overall sound quality, ease of operation and features. Additionally, there are more 3rd party style files available for Yamaha keyboards than all other makes combined. Consequently, this will allow you to expand the board's style diversity by a significant degree.

The other consideration in selecting the Tyros is technical support from forums such as this one and PSR Tutorial which will provide you with almost instant answers to technical questions pertaining to the keyboard's operation.

Good luck on your decission,

Gary

Thanks for the link. I joined this forum and downloaded some of the demo's. Then i reacx some of the user comments in the forum. What i found particyularly interetsing was the comment from one of tyhe owners of the G70 who actually heard the Korg PA1X and compared it to the G70.....

after hearing the demos and reading the comments from existing owners of the G70 and from my own limited experience of it, i would suggest Jose that you listen again to the Tyros or the PA1X.

Just to add a little comment: in the past I used to own a Roland VA7 and right now in my home studio I have a Yamaha Motif ES rack and a Roland Fantom XR. This is to say that, speaking of sound, I know well both Roland and Yamaha. I realize that the sound is a very subjective issue, so I am not going to comment here, but one thing can be said for sure: a great part of the "sound" is given by the effect section, and in this department Yamaha wins big time. In my Tyros I can layer three sounds in the right part of the keyboard and each sound can have a different reverb; correct me if I am wrong, but in the G 70 you can have only one reverb for all the three sounds, and this is just an example.
Speaking of quality, in my VA 7 the reverb quality was so "average" that I had to buy a separate unit (TC Electronic M-One XL) to have a decent sound. Since I bought the Tyros, the TC Electronic is collecting dust and now I am thinking to sell it.
Moreover, I have played the Motif ES rack and the Fantom XR side by side and, while I like some waveforms more in the Fantom, the reverb quality in the Motif is so much better! Plus, you can have up to eight insertion points and -again- this means that when you play in Performance mode each sound can have its own effects.
So, even if I admit that I would like to have a G 70 and use it as a master keyboard (because I LOVE the feel of the keys), I am now thinking to buy an 88 notes keyboard, like the Kurzweil PC2 X or the just announced Yamaha S 90 ES and use it as a master keyboard to control the Tyros. And this is because Yamaha refuses to release a 76 notes Tyros 2.

Andrea

Hi José,
As you know, Tyros I is out-of-date. The Tyros II is coming very soon. If the money is not a problem for you, maybe, is better, to wait til October. Anyway, it´s up to you. Why don´t you come to Lisbon to see and taste these keyboard?

Can somebody tell me a site where I can compare Tyros 1 & 2?
I intend to spend about 3000€.
And yes, I'm gonna need some extra helps and tips, cause I'm new in recent PSR´s
BTW, I'm 38 and just play and compose for fun and family!!!

Hi José.

Another portuguese José here! As many of the members in this board know, I don't like step into this "best keyboard" race. For a simple reason: I'm pretty convinced there's no "best keyboard". In their own ways, my previous and my present arranger keyboard have served me very well. I'm aware of their weaknesses and their strengths and choose them according to my needs. I presently have a Tyros, but had a Ketron/Solton and a Roland in the past. I can tell you why I like my Tyros: very friendly OS, full of features, great factory styles (and huge choice of free styles available in online Yamaha communities), excellent audio quality, nearly ideal size/weight for gigs. It inspires my playing and my live acts, and that is the most important issue: the thing you should look for is the best match between you and your playing style and needs, and the instrument capabilities. It's very important that, if possible, you spend some time playing both the G-70 and the Tyros, or at least you both leasurely go through the manuals, and read as much as you can on the internet forums (and this is, in my opinion, the best place to do it). Reading different opinions about the keyboards and knowing well the personalities, musical background and playing/gigging needs of each of the opinionators, you can have a pretty accurate idea of what can be best for you. I insist: give up looking for the "best" keyboard; instead try to know or to guess from all the info around which one makes you happier.

E-mail me if you need further help in portuguese!

-- José.

Thanks, Router

We never get the best, I know. And I've made my mind - Tyros (actual and not T2).
It's more than enough for me and I believe that I'm gonna spend many and many funny hours around it.
I'll put my hands on it on July 18th. I just can't wait anymore.
"See" you all.

Josè,
could you post again a picture of your setup? Also, since I am looking for an 88 notes weighted keyboard, what is your opinion about the Kurzweil PC2X? (I am asking because you are a Kurzweil owner, if I remember correctly).

I really don’t care what people think about what I like to play: styles, piano, door rings or nothing at all. I just do it to amuse my self and I’m happy with it. What about you?
BTW, some words of “wisdom”: don’t argue about foolish things; life’s to short.

José Medeiros,
In case you plan a visit to the "continente", you are most welcome at Bragança. I'd be glad to show you the Tyros around! Like you, I'm not a pro; just a teacher with a great interest in music.

Andrea,
I still own a Kurzweil KME-61, which is a "light" version (61 keys and fewer sounds) of the PC2X series. It's a lightweight instrument that I always carry in the trunk of my car. In case I meet other musicians I'm ready for a jam session! As far as I know the PC2X uses the well known weighted Fatar action. Some like it, some don't. Personally, it's not one of my favorites' (on the contrary I find the semi-weighted Fatar - for example the SP76 - action very good).

I go to my gigs as light as possible. That means I bring the Tyros only. Sometimes at home I indeed use a full weighted keyboard (for the pleasure of playing) to control my Tyros, through midi. I'm using a cheap and old Technics SX-P30. I love its action and find it better than the Kurzweil's Fatar action. By the way, the piano in the Technics is still very good for the present standards, so it's a great stage piano too. For me it was a cheap solution to have a good key feel.

In the PC2 series you will find excellent triple strike pianos (the same in my KME and still among the best, in my opinion), many synth sounds and excellent organs (not present in the scaled down KME-61). I would say it's an excellent choice, but make sure you won't be disappointed by its key feel. Of course, you can always wait a few months for the new Yamaha S90ES - that will be a top notch stage piano / synthesizer / controller!

I'll post recent pictures of my setup as soon as possible.

-- José.

Josè Medeiros: no problem at all: I understand.

Josè Matias: thank you for your reply; yes, I too was thinking of the S 90ES as an alternative: it should be in the stores before the end of August (USA) or September (Europe).
Ciao!
