I have a weakness for proverbs. Here are some of my favorite Lao and Chinese proverbs:

-Although he who walks behind an elephant may feel very secure, he is likely to get splattered with elephant dung.(Lao)

-Learning means loving the country. (Lao)

-When the water rises, the fish eat the ants; when the water falls, the ants eat the fish. (Lao)

-You know, you teach. You do not know, you learn. (Lao)

-Say yes when nobody asked. (Lao)

-A bad word whispered will echo a hundred miles. (Chinese)

-Tell me and I'll forget; show me and I may remember; involve me and I'll understand. (Chinese)

-Outside noisy, inside empty.(Chinese)

-Make happy those who are near, and those who are far will come. (Chinese)

-To forget one's ancestor's is to be a brook without a source, a tree without root.
(Chinese)

-To talk much and arrive nowhere is the same as climbing a tree to catch a fish. (Chinese)

-Be not afraid of going slowly; be only afraid of standing still. (Chinese)

-People who say it cannot be done should not interrupt those who are doing it. (Chinese)

-Failure is not falling down but refusing to get up. (Chinese)

-If you wish to know the mind of a man, listen to his words. (Chinese)

-A wise man makes his own decisions, an ignorant man follows public opinion. (Chinese)

-Respect out of fear is never genuine; reverence out of respect is never false. (Chinese)

-Dripping water can eat through a stone.(Chinese)

-Clear conscience never fears midnight knocking. (Chinese)

-If people no longer fear death, how can you threaten to kill them? (Chinese)

-You think you lost your horse? Who knows, he may bring a whole herd back to you someday. (Chinese)

-If you do not study hard when young you'll end up bewailing your failures as you grow up. (Chinese)

-A life with love is happy; a life for love is foolish. (Chinese)

-Once a tree falls, the monkeys on it will scatter. (Chinese)

-Pick up a sesame seed only to lose a watermelon. (Chinese)

-A friend made is a road paved; an enemy created is a wall built. (Chinese)
