Dollar for dollar , it's the best deal you can get . It has multimode filters , so you can emulate sounds from the early Korg synthesizers like the 700s and 800DV . Plus you can get some sounds like the MS-10 and MS-20 . You can control it from any Midi controller . It has nearly the same synthesis engine that the MS-2000 has .

Yes you can MIDI up a controller to the microKORG. The 37 key keyboard that is onboard is more a convenience if you don't have a controller keyboard handy. It is a great deal for a VA synth with a vocoder onboard.

Ummm ... standard tones ??? What does that mean ? It is a virtual analog synth and certainly makes standard tones for an analog synth. So if analog is what you are after this will be fine for playing chord and lead parts in a band.

However if you are after an acoustic piano sound then look elswhere ...

It can only respond up to 4 voices . That's it's limit .

Micro Korg is OK. If you need more than 37 or so keys get a used DX7 - it's affordable as well as rock-solid and will last you for a long time (it's almost bullet-proof). But to get the full use out the DX7 as a controller get an "SER-7" update (contact Yamaha abot that). It doesn't cost much.
Let me know if you want more info or other options. I'd go with the DX though. I had one since I was a kid (for 15 years now!). It still works - NOT even a SCRATCH on it (although it's been through a lot) Great aftertouch too.
Ivan.
