Hi folks,
Anyone have an answer for me? I have set up Cakewalk Pro Audio9 to record an Audio track. I have set the volume slider on my sound card to 127. I send the data from my piano, and record it in a single track. Works like a charm! However, when I play it back on my laptop, the volume is so low I can barely hear it. The volume on my laptop is also set as loud as it will go. Any suggestions?
Carol

Hi All,
Forgot to mention -- when I look at the Audio View in Cakewalk, the line is flat which is not normal for audio. Am using the host cable connected to the computer jack in back of piano and other end connected to joy stick port on laptop. When I record MIDI data, the volume is normal. Could this be a problem with my sound card settings?

Hi Carol.

Maybe it's only the volumes in soundcards mixer who have to be
adjusted a bit?
If you see a "speaker" in your system try, open it by doubble click,
and you'll see a "mixer" where you can adjust several "sliders".
(How this appear is depending of which software who runs on your PC)

In the menu of the "mixer", look for a option for advanced settings.
Now you will see "boxes" to mark if there is more options to choose.
Now look at the sliders, and see if there is any for "Digital sound"
or/and "Synth" (or similiar), and move that sliders upward to see if
the volume get louder.
Here you'll also see a slider for "line in", and if that is too low,
the insignal will be low when you're recording too, and then again too
low when playback the song.

Hi GJ and Technics Player,
GJ -- I have done just what you suggested. To be on the safe side, before recording, I set everything to max volume on my sound card and the low volume was my result. Also set the Velocity of the track I am recording to in Cakewalk to 127. Technics Player -- What do you mean when you say I did not mention an Audio Lead? Only connection I have made from piano to laptop is the host cable. What more do I need? Explain it simply, please!

sorry, Carol, not being awkward, just trying to get the whole picture before an answer can be formulated. If you had a cable just follow Gunnar's instructions and you will be fine.

assuming you are trying to make a recording of your playing in order to make a cd etc you need a stereo audio cable from the 2 line out sockets (left and right) on the piano to the audio line in socket on your soundcard.

The piano sockets may need 2 6.3mm mono jack plugs, and the soundcard may need a 3.5mm stereo jack plug, or maybe 2 phono plugs if an expensive sound card, you have to check exactly what your equipment needs. You need a screened audio cable with the correct plugs and/or adaptors.

Hi Technics Player,

I feel so generous that I will give you 90% of my sales! However, 90% of zero still equals zero in my Math 101, so don't go out and buy that new KN on the strength of your earnings from me or stay in a spendy motel in Frankfort! Now I am off to Radio Shack to buy the right stuff! I will save the thanks till I get back -- who knows, I may have more "not so bright" questions!

Hi GJ & TechnicsPlayer,
You guys are teriffic! It works! Thank you, thank you, thank you! (However, 2 Radio Shack stores later, the clerks wish I would have taken up embroidery instead of music! --- And they haven't even heard me play! What can I say?) GJ, send me your glasses, I will even wash them with the anti-fogging good stuff instead of soap and water! TechnicsPlayer, your first check is in the mail, however I wouldn't stand at the mailbox waiting for it to arrive. Thanks again. Without the support of you "techies" or "gurus", many of our instruments would be gathering dust instead of getting a workout!

Thank's for the cleaning offer Carol, it's slightly better now
Really nice you got it to work, have fun !
I'm glad I'm either a "Techie" or a "Guru" according to the
different descriptions around, just a amateur who happens to
have fun playing and exploring my keyboard, and also post some
words on the great forums around
I'll keep my ears open at MTV for your Top 10 recordings.....

Hi Carol,
there's no such thing as a 'not so bright' question. I rather admire your get up and go. At least you find out how to use everything and get the most out of it. Others more shy may never get to use all the great features available, just because they don't want to ask, or worse, because they just want to pretend they know it all

Hi Technicsplayer,
Thanks for the kind words again. Just have to tell you that I have recorded my first CD today -- it is way cool! Also am surprised at the quality of the sound for my first attempt! Wonders never cease! Soon as the euphoria wears off, I want to try converting MP3 to MIDI to play around with on the piano. Just watch out, the questions will be a flying soon!

Carol, if you manage to convert the MP3 or other
Audio files to Midi in a proper way, you're going
to be the one who have to tell all of us what to
do

Hi Carol,
If you can find a way of converting MP3 or any other audio file to MIDI, you are going to make a lot money, and by implication, you'll also make Alec Rich !

There are several softwareprogs to convert audio to midi
on the market, but they usually don't manage to do a proper
convert of more that one single voice at the time.
If you play a clean flute or piano etc, it's possible, but
there are no success with a music piece of many instruments
at once at the moment, at least as I have heard about.

this is true, Widi (wave to midi)is a program that can handle monophonic voices, with a little editing to get it right.
But it is just a question of harmonics. The harmonics of an entire orchestra playing together, all mixed together make recognising the fundamental frequencies very difficult.
With enough processor power it may be possible to work backwards to the fundamantels of each instrument. Maybe in a few years time this may be possible because the solution lies mathematically in crunching many numbers repeatedly until the pattern emerges.

Alec, I continue to be impressed with the content of your comments. As usual, you are precisely correct with your explanation.

Hi Bob,
thanks. frankly now we are in the area of multi gigaherz processors in home computers I would have thought that we should be in a position to go somewhere with this problem? It is probably the only form of format changing which you can't do with your other applications; most of what you need to do with audio and midi is already covered by one thing and another already available.

Maybe the problem is commercial and the financial rewards from a potential musician market seems not enough to justify the research involved?

But I have seen Fourier Transform programs on the pc for acoustics calculations. The same math could be used for this application, I would guess.
If you've ever seen the Sibelius software for score recognition, that was ground breaking in its genius. Let's hope someone similar has a go at this problem too. That would be incredible to get a midi track or score from any audio cd...

Well Folks, you talked me right out of this one for the next few years! Oh well, I have enough on my plate to keep me busy for quite some time. So, Alec won't get rich, and neither will I!! Thanks for all the good info. Saves me from beating my head against a wall.
