Hi Carol,
there's no such thing as a 'not so bright' question. I rather admire your get up and go. At least you find out how to use everything and get the most out of it. Others more shy may never get to use all the great features available, just because they don't want to ask, or worse, because they just want to pretend they know it all

Hi Technicsplayer,
Thanks for the kind words again. Just have to tell you that I have recorded my first CD today -- it is way cool! Also am surprised at the quality of the sound for my first attempt! Wonders never cease! Soon as the euphoria wears off, I want to try converting MP3 to MIDI to play around with on the piano. Just watch out, the questions will be a flying soon!
Carol

Carol, if you manage to convert the MP3 or other
Audio files to Midi in a proper way, you're going
to be the one who have to tell all of us what to
do

Hi Carol,
If you can find a way of converting MP3 or any other audio file to MIDI, you are going to make a lot money, and by implication, you'll also make Alec Rich !

There are several softwareprogs to convert audio to midi
on the market, but they usually don't manage to do a proper
convert of more that one single voice at the time.
If you play a clean flute or piano etc, it's possible, but
there are no success with a music piece of many instruments
at once at the moment, at least as I have heard about.

this is true, Widi (wave to midi)is a program that can handle monophonic voices, with a little editing to get it right.
But it is just a question of harmonics. The harmonics of an entire orchestra playing together, all mixed together make recognising the fundamental frequencies very difficult.
With enough processor power it may be possible to work backwards to the fundamantels of each instrument. Maybe in a few years time this may be possible because the solution lies mathematically in crunching many numbers repeatedly until the pattern emerges.

Alec, I continue to be impressed with the content of your comments. As usual, you are precisely correct with your explanation.

Hi Bob,
thanks. frankly now we are in the area of multi gigaherz processors in home computers I would have thought that we should be in a position to go somewhere with this problem? It is probably the only form of format changing which you can't do with your other applications; most of what you need to do with audio and midi is already covered by one thing and another already available.

Maybe the problem is commercial and the financial rewards from a potential musician market seems not enough to justify the research involved?

But I have seen Fourier Transform programs on the pc for acoustics calculations. The same math could be used for this application, I would guess.
If you've ever seen the Sibelius software for score recognition, that was ground breaking in its genius. Let's hope someone similar has a go at this problem too. That would be incredible to get a midi track or score from any audio cd...

Well Folks, you talked me right out of this one for the next few years! Oh well, I have enough on my plate to keep me busy for quite some time. So, Alec won't get rich, and neither will I!! Thanks for all the good info. Saves me from beating my head against a wall.
