I was watching BBC documentaries and it made me to look at who is responsible for music they use. These two videos are rather long, but it does help to understand how a serious music job looks today.
This video is probably a promotion of BBC's product, still, it's quite informative.
On the one hand it made me realise that physical arrangers or workstations are far behind from what software-based instruments have to offer.
On the other hand, on the contrary, it's stressed in this video that playability is a very important factor.
It's also discussed in the following video (if I understood that right - English is not totally clear to me) that composers are usually using just a part of sounds which are the most comfortable for them.
As we can see there're a lot of instruments in the studio, but none of arrangers. To me it doesn't say that arrangers are bad, but my vision is that arrangers are designed to work with songs, while soundtracks imply less structured music.
