A German pop singer and comedian (known for rather corny sketches, broadcasts and songs in the 1980s), Frank Zander, has organized big Christmas dinners for the homeless in Berlin for the past years.

This is a report about this year's event with 3,000 guests (German-language only). Politicians and some celebrities, e.g. the Berlin mayor and some federal ministers, helped serving the guests.

In a world of hustlers and crooks, this kind of story makes me feel really good.

Yea, it's always fashionable during Thanksgiving and Christmas to feed the homeless. What about the rest of the year? I don't see them throughout the year during my volunteer activities.

An organization that I am proud to be a part of (Hosea Helps) since I've been in the Atlanta area, this year (with the help of 1500 volunteers) prepared over 10,000 meals for the poor and homeless in downtown Atlanta. There were also volunteer doctors, nurses, dentists, barbers, social workers, etc. to provide their respective services (free, of course). This is a long-standing thing in Atlanta started by civil rights leader and activist, Hosea Williams, and maintains a full-time staff of organizers. The two big events are Christmas and Thanksgiving. One neat thing this year was that three families (with small children) living in cars were put up in temporary housing (motel) with the promise of continued assistance in finding and procuring permanent affordable housing for them....not much, but as Russ says, "it's better than doing nothing".

Despite our efforts to instill a sense of volunteerism in our children, we have not been very successful. My daughter has a heart of gold but doesn't think much beyond her immediate friends (and the local animal shelter ), and my son has no problem donating money to a charitable cause, but I've yet to see him get involved in any kind of 'hands-on' volunteer effort. Oh well, they're adults now and my influence is a thing of the distant past . We do what we can.
