Actually your email doesn't even have to be hacked for this to happen. It just gets "harvested" and then used as the "From Address" in outgoing emails. They don't even have to hack your email account to do this.

I got a notice from domain name supplier that I had exceeded the number of allowed emails to be sent and my email account was locked. I called them and they talked me through the fix and told me what had happened.
