Back when I was a very young, handsome devil, I was in a 5 piece country band. Our fiddle player, Erick Erickson, who passed away just over a year ago at age 97, was probably the best bluegrass fiddler I ever ran across. He was always quite modest and said there were a lot of better players around, and he was an amateur at best.
When he turned 92 I decided to hold a birthday party for him and invite many of the old band members to my home for the occasion. Today, myself and one guitar player are the only ones still alive.
Erick was a US Navy fighter pilot during World War II and the Korean War. He was among the first of his squadron to land upon an aircraft carrier in the Pacific shortly after the Marines took Guadalcanal. When he returned from his first mission, his plane was riddled with bullet holes, but he said he never knew the aircraft was hit until he landed that afternoon. He was an incredible person and I miss both he and his wife dearly.
This video was shot during the party by my daughter and forwarded to me last night. Sure brings back some fond memories of the "Old Days."

Nice memories. Good times back then. Miss my old band mates too.
