Donny:

I was just thinking the other day about where does the industry go from here.

I know Gary had preached this for some time, that once you have the equipment you need to make you sound the way you want...why purchase more gear (other than replacement due to technical issues) out of boredom.

I think technology has reached a point where the incremental steps a new board might provide, makes upgrading impractible and difficult to rationalize spending the money. (Unless you're Bill Gates)

I think people have reached a point where the gear they have serves their purpose. Spend the time you have getting to understand and discover all of the hidden options the gear has to offer.

I know I will probably not see a need to replace the 970. Heck...if it were'nt for Don M, I would still be fiddlin' around with USB recorder. There are so many good choices today, and at all price ranges, to give one the ability to accomplish anything they want.

I may be rambling, as tomorrow may bring a whole new dimension to arrangers and synths, but I doubt it.

Well, I don’t have anything to say or add to the discourse. Most here know far more than I’ll ever learn about these boards. I identify with Jingleman’s point about the current arrangers meeting everyone’s needs for the most part. My two arrangers certainly offer more than I’ll ever use. So, if/when Yamaha upgrades its models----what do we do---give in to the impulse to sell/trade to have the latest model? I’d still be playing the same tunes with it. So, Yamaha can take its time for my part. I’m content at present. However, the door is always open a little to be swept away with the next new, big thing.

Hi Guys
Yes , you'd have to wonder what they could possibly offer. Improved sounds, improved styles, is that really enough to make one want to upgrade.
I still like the idea of an arranger module, but, obviously not that popular with players in general , or korg and Yamaha would have one. For the convenience, I would certainly replace my Yamaha psrs950 for a module , in an instant.

Why be so concerned about the NRW GEAR, when one needs to arrange with what they presently have.....motif 8 to Tyros 5...

I agree with alot of what has been said so far....you have to ask yourself "What Can't I Do Already with what is on the market and what I have now"....... improving your playing skills is what the emphasis should be on, technology for today's arrangers is more then good enough to create amazing music if you know how,.. keys

I struggled with a Motif 8 in 2005...but I built up my arranging chops for the Tyros 5. Technology will come. Nurture your gift every day you are in your studio. It only gets better imho.

There is more to this forum than new keyboards. I am the first to want the latest model; but there is more to this forum; just sharing our individual talents. Music and performing music has many, many areas that we can share.

1-Subsituting chords
2-The modes and scales that we are using for improvising. .
3-Special technics that we use to get the most out our equipment.
The list is long.

I know we have touched on some of these subject but there is more to share. This is not to take place of the excitement we get form sharing the new products; but it can fill in the slow times.

IMHO, John C.

I'm totally happy with my gear.
Had to order a new Tascam DR-05 today. Mine quit working. This will be my third one. The first one works but the screen went out. When I get time I will to take them apart and use the screen from one on the other.
I have used the recorder almost every day and night for several years. Really don't expect them to last forever, especially if you drop them, as I did the one with broken screen. smile

I totally agree, John ... I am always looking to learn in these areas, especially chord substitutions ...

Also, how about posting some music ?!? ...

If we no longer buy new stuff, all the keyboard manufacturers will go out of business. I'm here for a good time not a long time. I try and be a good cog and buy as much new stuff as I can afford. I love to get new stuff.

I am quite happy with my current setup... Actually i only use the Kronos and the tyros5, not using any Vst's lately.. And i sold the integra7 because all it did was gathering dust...

Still havent played the Montage tough, the sounds and big blincking knob are still intrigueing... i would have the money for it on my bank account, but i dont think it will add much.... On top of that, i found a way to controll multiple parameters from a single knob on the Kronos. Allowing to mimic some of that super knob...

I think in the end, i be wayting to upgrade the tyros5 or the Kronos when they get a replacement thats a worthwhile update...

Hi Bachus,
Don't use my vst's much either. If I want to play it's so much easier to just press the "ON" button on the keyboard, and away I go.

Speaking of Summer, after Sunday's gig I realize I do need another piece of equipment.

What are you using on stage to keep cool?

Any suggestion? I see from some of the pictures there are small fans loaded on the rock and roller carts.

I think for a lot of musicians it comes down to want or need. If you need it and can afford it you get it. If you just want it then you have to decide. I'm a practical person and with the business end of music slowing down for me I'm not buying anything new. Moving a few times over the last few years has also got me on the less is more path. Got rid of a lot of things I just liked having around but really didn't need. I do miss my B3, Studio Piano and motorcycle but times change.
I do have a small mixer for my DJ setup on back order from Sweetwater. BTW its a Behringer mixer and all their stuff is on backorder beause their gigantic factory in China got hit with an earthquake.
The new JBL Eon One PA and a few keyboards have me tempted but I'm staying put for awhile. I'm getting more into just playing piano on my Casio Privia and by that I mean more attention to music and not the programming, etc. that goes along with my BK9 arranger.

I'm in a holding pattern, with my dear little Janice, the woman I am the guardian for now in final renal failure stages in a nursing home. I slept 15 nights in a chair in a hospital, and now go directly to the home and sleep on a small couch. She is slipping fast. I fight with 5 big, loud church ladies about her treatment...ladies who did absolutely nothing for her when she was in such bad shape over the years.

Two sons and 3 brothers who live in town have yet to show up.

How sad.

Sadly, Nigel, with three living children, 5 siblings and a whole lot of church affiliates, when it comes right down to it, she has no one else. In the hospital over two weeks and now in the nursing home over two weeks...no blood relative has stopped by, and 5 live here in Lexington. Church ladies chow up to bitch about my care and ask if I'll still be sending donations to the furnace fund.

The odd thing is, because of mental challenges (mentally, she is a first grader), she has never expressed any appreciation...never said thanks for anything."Ask Russ" is all she has ever said. She thinks George took care of her until she died; then Russ took over.

It's like taking care of a dependent child.

Been on the boat for four days, just arrived in Cape Charles, VA after sailing 215 miles. Hot as Hades, the boat's AC broke down, but the ancient mariner was able to make a fix in no time at all. Temp outside is about 91, in the cabin after 20 minutes of AC, the temperature is down to 77. Gonna be gone for 10 more days before returning home to get ready for the next trip.

All the best,

Just got back. The weather turned snotty, cut the trip short by a week because of the forecasts, had some scary moments during storms, but the boat and crew managed to do just fine. Now comes the task of cleaning up the mess, which will take all day tomorrow. Total distance covered = 416 miles. Stops included Magothy River's Dobson Island, Solomons Island, Maryland, Little Bay, VA, Cape Charles, VA, back to Solomons, then sailed through the night and arrived at the marina at 3 a.m.. Long night!
