I think that you need to TRY doing this, deb, then let us know how the audience takes hearing a singer, but not seeing one.
All I can say is, singers have been ruling the roost for thousands of years, I see very little chance this is going to change. Part of singing is COMMUNICATING with your audience... Singers do a great job of conveying emotion and energy, not just by their voice, but by their stage manner, their audience contact, by their expression and personality. Take all of that away, and just leave the recording, what have you got?
A DJ.
You see, the truth of the matter is, there aren't bars all over the world where people go to play music along with taped singers. There are bars where SINGERS go to sing along with taped MUSIC! It's called karaoke. Maybe you've heard of it?
Instead of this ridiculous theoretical idea, how about you go do it for REAL? Then come back and describe the disaster..!
