Would it cost more to shorten the backup period? And is there a way to offline the server backup..? Your worrying about losing the archive of 10 years or more leads me to believe there may be no server independent backup, right? Perhaps the members here could help you out by sponsoring the purchase of a multi-terabyte sized HD for offline server storage?

I can only imagine what a loss to the community having the last decade or so evaporate into the ether would be!

All of us appreciate how much effort and worry you must have gone through here.

How can we help?

Great idea Diki. I'll help. Oh, I forgot I wasn't responding to you. smile
I was probably at least as wrong as you were. Sorry.
I missed EVERY BODY when the forum was down.

The backup period currently is weekly which is pretty much the norm for most servers. I occasionally download the SQL database for the forum and keep a copy on my hard drive. The only reason I don't do it that often is because it takes a long time and ties up my PC. But after this I think I will start doing it more often. That should prevent the forum history being lost .... but I have never had to try bringing it back before. While it will probably work fine I won't really know until I try, which I don't want to do unless I have to. When there is a server backup that can be used I leave it to that. I just get paranoid in case the server backup is not good.

But I think I will put the donations I have been getting towards buying a USB HD just for backing up forum files. I will just get a 500 GB drive which will work just fine and doesn't cost too much and provides plenty of storage space for backups.

You would think people have better things to do than hack forums. Well done for sorting it out.

Nigel, I must say the loss of the forum for a few days, did have at least one neat positive effect.

While the forum was being resurrected, I went to Synth Zone's main page and did some exploring.

You have provided some terrific links and I really enjoyed my investigations...a very fine job, Nigel.

Like the others, I am very glad to see the forum section in operation again.
