I hope someone can help or advise me... I know it is a bit rude for a newbie to simply dive in with questions, but I have not been able to find a suitable answer anywhere.

I have a Ketron X1 and the hard drive has failed.

I have a replacement, which has been installed.

But now on boot, the new hard drive "spins up", the floppy will not do anything on boot up, and the screen simply come up with "disk int error".

Does the replacement hard drive need to be specially formatted - it is currently FAT32.

Would a disk failure also mean the disk controller board also fail....?

Has anyone got a list of hard drives that are working and compaitalble with the X1.

Thanks in advance.

The Hard drive needs to be below a certain size. In the X1 it could be 6gb, but certainly it will not work if the drive is larger than 20gb. It will probably ruin the hard disk too.

I would reccomend fitting a 6gb or less IBM or Hitachi Travelstar (if you do not want to buy a genuine Ketron Drive.)

The keyboard will detect and format the new hard drive on power up.

Hi

Thanks for your advice.

The new drive is a IBM Travelstar 5gb.
The old drive was a IBM Travelstar 5gb.

Simple swap I thought...

All connected, but nothing.
Like i said, the floppy drive does not do anything either.
And only the "disk in error" message...which goes away, the keyboard operates but without access to either of the drives...

Currently thinking the drive board has gone ...

if you disconnect the hard drive does the floppy work? if not then you likely have a problem with the controller board.

Hi,
Disconnected new HDD, and floppy still did not work.
Found some "thing" on the control board that were not working, replaced them, now floppy works.
But new HDD still does not work.
Nor does the keyboard format it straight away. Do you know if ther is there some way to "manually" format the drive by pressing the menu buttons? I have looked but cannot find a way.

The new HDD is recognisable when it is connected to a PC, so I know it works and is not damaged.

Thanks for your help anyway.
