Let me see if I can get this point across without sounding negative . . . I have been trying to use the STS setting with the STS light flashing on my PA3X. That setting causes the STS selection to change when a different style variation is selected.

Many songs that I play tend to need a different registration in voicing mid measure somewhere in the song. That is, the next phrase often starts in the middle (or one or two beats before the end) of a measure. That's the point where I sense a need for new voicing. When I used changes in Panel Memories for registration changes with the KN7000, the rhythm would change at the first beat of the next measure but the voicing changed at the next key press. So the voice changed almost instantly while the style changed at the start of the next measure. When I try to use the Korg STS/Style Variation function, I can't find a way to trigger the voicing change except at the start of the next measure along with the variation change. That's too late for the voicing changes that I want, but correct for the style variation change that is needed.

Is there any place deep in editing menus that would let me change the way that function works? If not, how do you folks deal with this issue? I've tried changing variations one measure earlier but it doesn't sound right, especially if I have an automatic fill working. And, it often causes a voice change for the first beat or so of the measure that I don't want. For now, I cannot use the function and I leave the STS button lit all the time or unlit.

Bob, When using the STS settings with the light flashing you are subject to waiting until the style finishes the measure. I do see your point: the style changes at the end of the measure but you want the new instrument to play immediately so you can play over the change.

Technics:
1-You can set up a panel memory to change instrumentation without a style change.
2-You can set up a panel memory (Extended) which will change the instruments and style.

You can accomplish #1 by using the Performance on your Pa3x. I shut off the Blinking STS light and select from the 4 STS settings -- or from the performance.

Did the Technics STS settings change instruments immediately when you went to the next variation or did that wait for the next measure?

I still believe in setting up at least 8 different full band sounds in the panel memory (Technics) or in performance (Korg) just to get a different feel in a song.

John, you said "You can accomplish #1 by using the Performance on your Pa3x. I shut off the Blinking STS light and select from the 4 STS settings -- or from the performance."

That is obviously what I am doing with the STS buttons although I do it with a foot switch and I am working with the Song Book rather than performances.

You said "Did the Technics STS settings change instruments immediately when you went to the next variation or did that wait for the next measure?"

As I said in my first post, the voicing changes immediately with the next note played, and the next variation occurs at the first beat of the following measure. This is with Panel Memories functioning in the expanded mode, of course.

Bob, I find that song book does a good job for selecting a song with all its frills; it covers a great deal. Performance does a different job it deals with instrumentation; I used it as an extension of the 4 STS settings. The STS and performance do a similar job; many times I will write one of the performance settings into a STS setting.

Panel memory in extended mode is equal to Performance plus Style. If I remember correctly some used up to 8 extended panel memories for one song because it was so easy to load a song from the card. You can do most of that with Performance.

Bob, when I first starting working with the Pa800 I would ask myself this question: How can I make this new keyboard do what I did with my Kn7? Well that was not a fair or complete question; each keyboard was designed differently. When I made some compromises I found that I not only got the job done but I was offered things I did not get from the Kn7. I had to tell myself to work with Korg’s design; the results have been great.

Keep going Bob, knowing you it won’t be long until you have your Pa3x doing one great job.
