A friend from California who purchased my Kn7000 about 4 ˝ years ago called and asked me for some help/advice.

1-Guitar, Sound system, Bass and his Kn7000 all went dead after hearing a cracking noise. They were all connected to a house extension.
2-He check the extension wire with other instruments that belonged to the house, all worked well.
3-The only thing they all had in common is that they were all plugged into the same power strip that had 9 imputes.
4-His Kn7 does not light up.

Any feedback will be appreciated. He is using his Kn6000 for a backup.

I guess the first thing I would be doing is checking the internal fuses on the gear that has stopped working because there is a pretty good chance they have burnt out and will need to be replaced.

Nigel, thanks. I do not have a manual so I do not have any idea where the fuse might be. And how much of a job is there to open the keyboard. I opened a psr2100 Yamaha and found a nightmare, 75% of all the connections were connected to the top of the keyboard. I had to disconnect 25% to get to the problem. Years back I opened a Kn 3000; a dream, everything was laid out and easy to get to.
I thought with all the knowledge on this forum we could help Bill Dickson with his problem.

Hi John,

Sorry to hear about your friend's problem.....

I've had a look at the Technical Manual for the KN7000 and there is a 'master' fuse on the Power Supply board, but of course, it's internal frown
I cannot understand the philosophy of fitting the main fuse internally - requiring a major dismantling process to replace it, when it would be quite simple to include a fuseholder on the rear panel of the instrument.....
Technics are not the only ones to do this!

Any extension mains leads which I use, always include 'Surge Protection' circuits - worth it for increased peace of mind.....

I know it's a real pain but I would stromgly suggest that your friend contacts an engineer to have the fuse replaced - assuming that is the only problem - since dismantling the KN7000 to gain access is not for the 'faint-hearted' smile.

The fault could have been caused by a surge or 'spike' on the mains supply.

I think this same problem came up on this Forum a few months ago. I cannot remember if a solution was found.

However, when my original KN7 behaved like that, I was advised to replace all the leads with new ones and using a 'Surge' Plug make sure only the KN7 was connected direct to the mains socket because it is never a good policy for the mains power lead of a keyboard to share a socket with other devices. It cured the problem for me, thank goodness.

Just a thought!

Audrey

A big thank you for all those who cared enough to help Bill Dickson with his Kn7000. His letters are below.
John C.

Hi John,
I just received word from the repair person that I entrusted to repair my 7000. Great news, it blew the master fuse but all seems OK. He’ll have it back to me from Sacramento when he makes his up trip on Friday.
Thanks for all your concerns and help.
I’ve learned to live with a better surge protector next time.

Hope you’re well and the same for you lovely wife.
Retirement is wonderful as long we have good health.

Regards, Bill & Marie

Second letter:
Oh, by the way John, my repair person says they don’t provide an external fuse as many keyboardist would stuff anything in the holder to get it running, but end up burning the whole thing up. Probably the tin-foil off there cigarette case.
My repair bill turned out to be $113., which was cheep for what I had expected.
