Look forward to your favorite...

Larry, got to admit Cash's rendition of Nine Inch Nails song "Hurt" very difficult video to watch for me,
especially realizing now he's is no longer with us. Profound performance. Just how close to his death was this recorded?

Ok Larry, Here's one of my current favorites cool

Jamie Cullum - Wheels

I love that Johnny Cash video, Larry, although, like Scott, it is a bit difficult to watch...Cash was one of my favorites growing up, and the tune "Hurt" really told of the inner turmoil he had over his lifetime.

My favorite is this video by Boz Scaggs, a "live" performance...the song never fails to give me chills...there's just something about the whole tune that just "works" on many levels.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0UAAZZrzNXk&feature=related

It is one of my favorite tunes to play as well.

Ian

Scott, I beleive Cash recorded that video only a few months before he passed. A friend and I had a debate on which Hurt rendition was better, Johnny Cash or Nine Inch Nails. I liked JC's,

The Jamie Cullum video was well produced, different, and enjoyable. I have not seen any of his stuff before, and I'm already a fan

Ian, Boz is one of my favorites also. The live video was so good, it sounded like a studio recording. He's one of the best ever.

Thanks for both links

Donny, I do not even need to look at that one. It is one of my favs on the iPod smile

100% agree - a wonderful rendition of this classic. And she was an awesome (and I don't use that term often or lightly) singer and interpreter of songs.

Dennis, I agree I get CHILLS listening to here sing & play. A true talent always shines with the littlest of backing. I'm glad we still have her music to enjoy.

Take care

In addition to Somewhere Over The Rainbow, this one especially moves me. Eva Cassidy is greatly missed, but thankfully her music endures and lives on my iPod too. smile

Yeah Scotty, got that one too..Got ALL of her songs in iTunes...
Her, Dusty Springfield, Diana Krall, there are others...all great interpreters of songs.

I mean ANYONE can sing a song (well perhaps some shouldn't LOL), but the innate ability these guys have to interpret a song, and have it mean so many different things to each person that listens, is the "true god-given talent" in my view anyway smile

Dennis, all you need to do is click the link and the title will pop up even BEFORE the track plays. You don't HAVE to listen if you don't want to. Sometimes, a surprise can be nice. Who knows? Perhaps someone actually listened to this rather than going 'Bjork? The weird dressed girl with the weird voice?' and passing on a great listen...

My hands hover over the Command-W (close window in mac-speak) every link I click, but most times, I'll at least find out if it is WORTH a listen.

Thing is, you start threads with a LOT of embedded video in them, they can take quite a while to load. Just providing the link speeds up the page load...

Yep well now that I know it was bjork, I am even happier I did not click smile

I do understand what you said Diki, but then you are usurping the right of the person to decide for themselves if they want to listen or not. When you also note briefly the artist, or what the link is about, that at least gives the looker the option.

Plus I just think it is plain courteous to give a brief explanation.

Dennis

Best thing about the links is the other video links to the side of it. You can go on a journey of discovery that will take you to places you NEVER expected to be if you just start clicking on them. I hope you perhaps had a listen to a couple of other Bjork videos if you had the time. I can highly recommend just about ANYTHING from that concert, and if you like the live versions, going back and checking the originals can be an eye-opener.

I've been fascinated with her since the mid eighties and the Sugarcubes. One thing you can NEVER say of her is 'I've heard THAT before!' and, after forty years in the biz, that's SO rare...

I have so many favorites but one I really like is Beth Hart singing her composition and playing piano on "I Leave The Light On". I first heard her singing with Jeff Beck. And I love her music. She is like a modern incarnation of Janis Joplin.

or for more fun covering Led Zepplin's "Whole Lotta Love"

A full sized string and brass orchestra in Covent Garden, a harpist (both acoustic and electric), a choir of Greenland Eskimo women, and a couple of hardcore electronica boffins, what's NOT to like about that?!

Let's face it, Dennis, if DonM can get behind it, it can't be THAT bad!

As I explained, simply clicking on the link doesn't force you to listen. I'm sad to see you so timid in discovering new music.

An unwillingness to click a link and listen to something I'm pretty sure you HAVEN'T heard of hers, despite a couple of other members (who you would think were perhaps also not her greatest fans!) liking it? What's a better word, then? wink

I went out of my way to pick something quite unique and accessible of hers, with an orchestra and choir, rather than the electronica you may be more used to hearing her do. Yes, she can do some VERY weird stuff! But this isn't one of them..!

The strange thing is that Beth is from the USA but I get the feeling her main fan base is in Europe ( these clips are from a concert at the Paradiso in Amsterdam ) which is why we don't hear much about her here. Such a pity cos she is an awesome talent. Obviously Jeff Beck knew about her to take her on his US tour a few years ago.

Don, agree with you, Eva Cassidy's Over The Rainbow is right up there with Eric Clapton's Edition. Even my 12 year old granddaughter likes it:

Sidenote: Can someone explain the "pickup" used by the keyboard player at around 2:20 ?

Are you talking about the mouthpiece he is blowing into?.

If so, it is a breath controller...looks like a Yamaha model...I have the other version, used on my CS-01, which looks like a whistle. Many Yamaha synthesizers (DX-7, DX-5, CS-01) and controllers (KX-88, KX-76 KX-1, KX-5) had this feature...although I believe he (David Sancious) is playing a Peavey Controller, which had similar capability

The breath controller he's using is a later version, and can be worn like a headset.

Can be used to control volume, filter, etc.

Very expressive indeed.

Ian

PS...you used to be able to buy a unit by "MIDI Solutions" that let you plug in a breath controller, and midi the device to your synth...also, I think Kurzweil may have had a breath controller input on some models.

I posted this video not so long ago in The Bar .... but because it is one of my all time favorites I will add it to this thread as well. This really is the best band in the world.
It is synth, bass, guitar and drumming at its very finest.

OMG! I remember seeing that OGWT show when it aired. It changed my life! Can't believe how YOUNG they all were back then! Return to Forever were a game changer for jazz.

Thanks for the clicking, Dennis. Here's another of my favorites. Not sure what it says about my taste, but Randy Newman is a song-writing son-of-a-gun.

Randy is truly one of the best writers out there...this is a version of his song, "Feels Like Home" sung by the incredible Linda Ronstadt...I couldn't seem to find a "live" version, but this one still is pretty nice.

Nice tasty Hammond organ embellishments and fine piano playing.

Fran, good one, Linda is truly one of the great voices in pop music, and she can really sing the old standards.

Al, Ambrosia, a great harmonizing band that I almost forgot about. Thanks for reminding me of this great song and video.

I saw them not so long ago on their 25th anniversary reunion tour. They were even better ... if that is possible. And they played all the tracks from the "Romantic Warrior" and "Light As Feather" albums. It was pure magic. And the night I saw them was Chick Corea's 65th birthday. They talked on stage about when Al Di Meola first joined the band ... he was 19 years old then. I have Romantic Warrior on vinyl and CD ... and I will buy it on whatever audio formats the future holds in store. Just love that record. When I first saw the OGWT performance back then I was blown away. I had already played the album to death but was knocked out at how easy they made it look live.

Now you got me started flashing back to my favorite jazz bands from the 70s.
Here is another clip from a tour I saw live in Australia. It was the Weather Report "Heavy Weather" tour.
Total virtuosity. Wayne, Jaco and Joe Zawinul ( managing an arsenal of classic keyboards ) .

I love this band.

Sassy's legendary 1958 jazz rendition of "Somewnere Over The Rainbow" is first class in my book. cool
The fine rhythm section ain't too shabby either.

Here is a very good friend of mine that I used to play bass with back in the 70s in Melbourne Australia playing "Over The Rainbow" on piano. His name is Warren Wills and he really is an exceptional piano player. You must listen to his interpretation. It starts off very tastefully ... and then becomes a virtuoso performance. This is keyboard playing at its very finest.

In this old photo from when we played together are ( from left to right )

Warren Wills
Anna Carina
Frank Tayla
Nigel Spencer

Nigel, enjoyed Warren Will's intimate to virtuoistic solo piano improvisation of :

Somewhere Over The Rainbow
Georgia On My Mind
It's a Wonderful World
What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life
and back to reprise Over the Rainbow again.

It makes it even more personal knowing he's a close friend and band mate of yours,
and nice to know that you'll be able to treasure his performance again years later too.
Nigel, do you by any chance have any recordings of you guys playing together back in the 70's?
That would be a treat to hear. smile

btw: cool band mates pic. cool Please indentify band members.

Well, he is not a keyboard player, but is no doubt a great musician:

Jeff Beck is magical to hear live. And I have heard him perform this live on a few occasions. He has a very special musical talent.

I am so pleased you enjoyed it. And I have gone back to my post and added the names to the people in the photo.

Unfortunately cassette recordings of the music we played together deteriorated over the years. The music we played was his original compositions. He scored it by hand for us. When we recorded it in the studio he even brought some horn players plus a string section consisting of violins and cello. He also scored all their parts as well. He is extremely talented.
