How do I connect my PSR 540 to my PC and make MIDIs. Do I need any hardware?

You need a soundcard with a MIDI-interface or an USB MIDI-interface (like one of MidiMan).

You can buy a soundcard or another midi-interface at a computer or music dealer.

I recorded some songs on an A: Disk without a rythm and it worked. I will think about getting a midi device on my computer.
What can you do with a midi device?
Can you programme a tune into your computer and then transform it onto the keyboard?

You sure can via a midi sequencing program. I have a PSR740 and an MZ2000 and they work great intandem with Yamaha's xg works software, which I paid about 80 bucks for. With the xg works u can not only perform the standard midi note writing and editing functions, but You can also use the onboard yamaha styles in the sequencer and step sequence the style types and chord cahnges. You can also obtain converted styles from the net and load them into the xg works software as well easily by simply placing these styles into the style folders in the software. works great. Also, via the xg editor you can alter or synthesize any of the internal sounds in a non destructive ( dosen't permanently change )mode.

There are several shareware and even a few freeware sequencers available on the net as well. You might want to try these just to get your feet wet. A pretty good freeware sequencer is the Massiva. It's available for download on shareware music machine or directly from http://home.c2i.net/jaase/massiva.htm
I still use this occasionally and its a pretty good basic sequencer ( sure beats the heck out of the one on my PSR740 ).
I can interface the comp sequencers with my midi keyboards via my soundblaster live card and midi cables.
