Is there a set rule for midi sequencing to certain channels?
Ex
2 -bass
4- ????
10 -drums etc
or can any combination be used?

From my experience There is no set rule. Drums for the most part goes to channel 10. I have set my sequences up with a set pattern as I find they are easier to deal with if they are all the same. Just personal experience.
