Interested to know if anyone is doing this. Did you find it better than one?
Do you find (1) is good enough?

Just curious. I had a sound guy listen to me yesterday. He loved the Bose sound, but thought it was too localized and would sound much fuller with one on each side.

Yes, I've used two for about the past year. I love it. I'm right in the middle and get the full stereo effect this way. Plus, if something should happen to one of them, I can still function just fine with the remaining one.
I've played parties up to a couple hundred people with the two Compacts.

Thx Don for the report. So I'm assuming there's an appreciable improvement over running one system? I would tend to believe so. Even though 90% of my jobs wouldn't require this setup, I know I'd like the stereo effect. And a great point about a reserve! Well, after a yr, my 1st is pd off. Time to purchase another yr installment (if they still offer the program)

Hey Jim-

As good as you sounded that day at 1 Lincoln Park, I think two would give you a fuller, richer sound.

You just have to figure out how to get everything in on one trip, lol...

Hope all is well...

Ordered my 2nd unit today. I turned off the keyboard speakers today and just felt I needed to have these things on both sides. I need to be the best I can be in this competitive marketplace. I think I can afford $83 mo from the checking account....

I actually found that two sort of cancelled each other out a bit - I'm sure it was because they were too close together, but the effect was not better for me. There were dead spots, and with one there were none. I did just buy a pair of the New QSC K12s for large parties, and I love them. My regular setup is still mono, still Bose, still spectacular!

It doesn't sound as though it is spectacular as you thought the Bose were..before..

So you needed more power and stereo...imagine that..

Safe bet they won't be used at the CrabTrap..

I read a while back about the "ripple" of the sound wave..made the Bose L series not practical for stereo...Probably the result Dave mentioned..

Keep in mind that under the Bose purchase agreement, you can try it for up to 45 days and if you don't like what you hear you can return the system for a full refund--NO QUESTIONS ASKED! I've heard DonM performing using a pair of L1 compacts--no phase cancellation was noted. However, it didn't sound any better than a single L1 compact to me. Of course, the person between the two systems on stage will benefit from the stereo sound, but will the audience? The jury is still out on this one.

Good luck,

Gary

Bill from Dayton, Is all well using the T1? I read your posts on the Bose forum as you were trying to set it up. I have many of the same concerns that you presented to the forum.

Don and Gary, Are you using the T1 with your Bose?

Is anyone using the Midjay/SD5 with the T1 and Bose Compact or L1?
Ciao,
Jerry

Well, I can say that when I turn my keyboard speakers off and listen to the mono Bose, I want to gag I've been duped all along by the keyboard monitors. In fact, I think I've had more positive feedback when I used a stereo setup. I know, I know, eq, etc. WHAT I WANT is the audience hearing the same thing I do when I listen to my keyboard speakers (that is the ultimate sound). If I don't hear an appreciable difference, I will return it and probably sell the other and go with a stereo setup, maybe something small, but I'm hoping (2) will result in what I seek.

Jerry,

I'm using a PSR-3000 with the L1 Compact, and prior to that, the standard L1. I believe DonM has used them with just about every keyboard ever made including the Audya, SD5, several Roland models, and maybe the Midjay.

Jim,

Sorry to hear you're not getting good results with your system. As I posted a couple years ago, you must dead-plug the onboard speakers so you can hear what the audience hears. It took me about an hour tuning the keyboard's EQs and effects to obtain the sound quality I wanted. Once I had it set, it was saved as a registration, the EQ's were anchored by the onboard Parameter Lock system, and I never looked back.

Good Luck,

Gary

BA330 users:

Where do you position the BA330 to get the stereo effect for your audience: I'm going to give this unit a try and really had one on order to do so some time ago (changed my mind as usual). Man, I want stereo again and those inputs - wow

Floor?
Pole?
In front?
Behind?
Beside?

Thx

All of the above..

I usually set it to my side about a foot behind the keyboard...I will use the tilt stand that is built into the unit..

Zuki, I understand just what you are saying and I am in agreement. But think of what you have said – “The ultimate sound is when I am sitting at my keyboard”. And that is what an army of sound engineers worked hard to accomplish measuring the exact position of your ears while sitting and placing the speakers in the ultimate spot so that you would hear one great sound.

Now all you have to do is to set up the audience and your speakers in the same manner. An impossible job at best. I know this is hard for people to understand accept but the sound of my guitar amp on stage was terrible and I did not like it – but when I had someone play my guitar and I went to the center of the room the guitar sounded great. Speakers use the room to do a job and most of that you will never hear any of that when sitting at your keyboard.

Does any of this help? No, but maybe it may help stop some of your Gagging. (smile)

John C.

Hey, I love my Bose Compact. Stereo is not important to me. You see my left hear does not hear as well as my right ear so the musicians on my left side always need improvement.

Thx to all that take time to put in their 2c. I did a sound check early on my last job today. I simply do not like what I hear from the Bose. I love what I hear from my keyboard, albeit from behind, or in the back of the room.

I move FAST. I sold the old Bose and have ordered Roland. I can get (2) for the price of (1) - leave one in the studio to work out the balances and take both to larger jobs (although I don't play large jobs).

These things are progressions of change in time. One thing for sure - I continue to love my 800 and that's going on 3 years.

Again, no loss financially or stupid decisions. I'm hoping that Fran and Dnj are correct, which I'm sure they are

Jim!!!! You sold your 130 watt Bose...for a 30 watt Roland?

Congratulations...

Honestly, you will be happy with the Ba330..the mids will enhance your vocals and give the PA800 more punch (not more volume), but a more pleasing sound overall..

And the mixer, anti feed back and other versatile connections will be a plus..

Yep, took the plunge. Call me...whatever....I was using the Bose volume very low anyway, about 10:00. Shipping out and using the Podiums for a bit....oh my God (something tells me I won't miss a beat). Life is good and things are simple All this while the wife is at her parents' lakefront MI home.

At least I keep things interesting for us, huh?

Jim,

I am just curious about your approach to setting up performances on the 800. Do you set them up using the onboard speakers, or do you actually set everything using the actual PA-system?

I have my spare 800 in the studio and do all my mixing through the internal speakers - If the 330 works out, I'll get another one for the studio and mix everything just as it would be on the job. Interesting question, thx.

Hey Jerry-

Yes, I'm very happy with the L1 with the tone module. I'm running a Tyros 2 through it and my vocals which are also run through a digitech harmonizer. I wouldn't go back to a traditional system unless I had to. I get consistently great comments on my sound and its one trip in/out on all my gigs.

How's it working for you?

Well, I think that is the reason why you are unhappy with the sound! From a personal experience, mixing and setting up should be done on the actual PA-system that you will be using. Internal speakers or headphones will not give you an accurate representation of the sound that you will hear through the PA.

By the way, I am glad to see that you are refusing to ruin the sound of your keyboard by playing through MONO.

I have used SD5, Midjay, and now Audya with both big and compact Bose systems. Love the sound I get. I've also used it (and still do some) with Roland E80 and 50 with equally good results.
What the Bose does is let you hear what you really sound like. If you aren't ready for the truth you may want to use something that hides stuff.
I generally use an external mixer (currently the Edirol), but almost everything is set flat. The Audya comes out of the box sounding great and doesn't require much e.q. adjustment. I do use the dedicated Vocal e.q and effects from the Audya to help my voice sound more like something I would want to listen to.
I tried Semilive's 330 and it is surprisingly better than one would think, but to mention it in the same sentence as Bose seems ridiculous to me. However, to each his own. If it makes you happy and your audience doesn't care, go for it!

hmm....interesting and a tad brash. Good thing we all have our own set of ears. The only way I want to hide my singing and playing is when the Bose amplifies it - ugh.

Good points and you helped me settle my case. The Bose IS NOT STEREO, regardless on how, where and what you throw in it.

The Bose was good. I used it for a year. But when I had qualified personnel really assess its sound, I knew I had to make changes.

Good advice..although I think some editing with "keyboard speakers" or headphones is fine...when trying to balance parts in relationship to each other..
Yes the ideal way would be with your sound system..

The biggest difference with the studio edits and the stage set up..is the EQ, and the frequencies response ...If neither of these are considered..there can be a dramatic difference..
This is one of the reasons I like the Edirol mixer with "RAC"...this one feature alone can take the sound I want from the studio edits..and transform them into the stage room..with similar results..and yes..in stereo..

DonM, have you tried the Edirol RAC on your Bose....I have found the results, a major improvement on the L series..So have every other Bose owner I know..that have tried it.
Not only does it make the Bose better...it makes all units better...Same with my "old" Roland Cubes...

Don, I like to know what you think about this...since you do use the Edirol...are you using RAC?

Not using RAC. I tried it briefly and evidently didn't get it right. I'll try it again sometime.
Zuki, I reread my post and I really didn't mean it to sound that way. It certainly wasn't meant to belittle you or your sound. Sorry.
There are at least five local groups or acts that have heard my sound and immediately purchased Bose systems. Three of those groups have members in the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame, so I figure it must sound o.k., at least in the backwoods.

Not only does it make the Bose better...it makes all units better...Same with my "old" Roland Cubes...

Don, I like to know what you think about this...since you do use the Edirol...are you using RAC?

Using...RAC 100% diffrence in sound quality......

Bill in Dayton,
I'll be using the T1 on tonight's gig for the first time. I'm very happy with the Bose Compact and the L1 Model 1 - I started using the Classic in 2003 for larger venues and the Barbetta for smaller gigs. I replaced the Barbetta with the Compact a while back. I had several mixers that worked well, my concern was with the T1. I just purchased the T1 and I'm still tweaking ... gettin' close to a good sound, not quite there yet.
Ciao,
Jerry

I cranked up and played my first job with kb speakers only and it was fantastic - unbelievable audience acceptance. Sorry for my Bose review, but no way I will ever run mono again.DonM - np, it was late and I was crabby - my bad.

Yo Zuki, I don't usually get involved in these kind of discussions. A year ago in June I bought my L1 Compact. The 2nd gig I played was a 50th anniversary. I was thinking small job. It was 250+ people. I cranked the Bose and there were 3 DJ's in the audience. They came up to me and said, we can't believe it, but you are carrying the room. They all went out and bought one. I have been happy as a lark with the Bose. Just my 2 cents.

Joe

Joe, my friend Gary M...is a great fan of Bose..he considers it the best for his needs..He just did a DJ gig..something he rarely does..it was an outdoor job to boot..He ended up using his Eons...and told me the Bose Compact was not the system for DJing..Gary also has the big L1 too..

Gary determined the moving air still has it 's strength...

Jerry,

Good performance.

Fran,

What did you record his performance with? Looked as if it was recorded with a cell phone.

Gary

I used my Fuji fine pix F30 camera (a great camera)..it was recorded over my left shoulder, hand held while having dinner...so I think it came out pretty good..

Gary, you have a cell phone that takes video this good?..You are a lucky man....actually my Dare phone does take great video too..but not as good as the F30...
