I just added "Mellow Yellow" although I'm still looking for the right style. I just brought back "Don't Let The Sun Catch You Crying." Working on Patsy Cline's "She Got You" and of course "Inna Godda Da Vida".

Just had to learn "Shenandoah" to provide backing for a friend's recording. It's a pretty song. When we get the recording finished I'll post it if he doesn't mind. . .
Or if he does.

"Shenandoah" is a beautiful song, and I hope you get the opportunity post it in the near future.

Cheers,

How Deep is the Ocean

Used to do this as a slow, soulful ballad (years ago) but decided to re-do it up-tempo. Here is a quickie cut I did this morning to run by the guitar player (he gets a good chuckle out of my fake guitar solos - personally, I think I sound a lot like him ). The chords may be shaky, I haven't played it in years. I'll work out a nice Jimmy/Groove-type solo later when I have time to work on it.

Sometimes, it's all about ATTITUDE, and Chas is FULL OF IT! (I mean that in a GOOD WAY-LOL). Tony and I were just talking about the tune Europa. I became interested in it when I heard the Barbieri version (love that guy's dirty, full tone-the best in the business, IMO).

I was surprised to learn that Carlos Santana wrote and recorded the tune in 1976 (a R&R , so-so version, at best). Then, I met and heard a little guy named Frankie Cicala play a live version for the JazzKat people at NAMM (go to the JazzKat site and click on the first block-upper left-1/2 way through, listen to the awsome piano solo by Stevie Wonder's piano player). This is a horrible quality video, but the best live version of this song I've heard. It really shows what "interpretation" is all about, as does Chas's work posted here.

Chas and other interpretive players are to be admired for putting their personal "stamp" on
tunes. Tony sent me his version of Europa, which says a lot about his taste, ability and involvement in creating unique versions of great tunes.

Let's ALL concentrate on what really matters...the MUSIC. And that's much better
when it's shared by friends, as it is in this case.

IT was great communicating with you Russ ...

chas ... groovin', man, ... what did you play that on? ...

whenever I hear that sound, I think of a dimly lit, smoke filled club, with people dressed to "the nines", drinking martinis or VO and soda on the rocks ...

how about a longer organ version for my iPOD???

The usual. Nord C1 w/Roland PK7a pedals, Tyros 2 'Jazz Guitar' patch, PA1x shuffle drum pattern. I almost always use that combination when 'scratching' something out, 'cause that's our normal configuration in the club (organ, guitar, drums). I love organ walking bass and comps. When it's working right with the drummer, it really grooves. It's hard to get the same rhythmic feel with a drum machine, though (although the patterns on the Korg PA1x are very good IMO.

Can't believe Zuki listed one of my favorite songs; I Thought About You. Great standard (assuming it's the same one I'm thinking about).

I really like this arrangement Chas...very smooth and has a nice groove throughout. The C1 sounds nice and bubbly, and the bass is awesome.

Good geetar pickin' too.

Nice work.

I've been working a tune by Boz Scaggs, called "We're All Alone"...found an old music book with a real nice arrangement...what a beautiful tune...it was made popular by Rita Coolidge in the mid 70's.

In the process of fine tuning a style for it.

Ian, that, too, is one of my staple pieces. That was also a big hit by Rita Cooledge in the late 70's.

Heard Boz do it at a concert here in Lexington in 1977 and have been playing it several times a week every since.

On arranger, I use a stock style from an old Solton MS-60 called "New Age", but that wouldn't do you, or anyone but another "dinosaur" any good.

GREAT TUNE!

Russ

Russ,

I used to play We're All Alone rather roughly (more like, wrongly ), but the arrangement I found in an old Fake Book, has the proper chords...a lot of slash chords, and boy, do they ever make a difference.

I modified an E.Piano Ballad so that it will play over the 2/4 measures in the song...used a program that Michael Bedesem made for me, called StyleAdjust.

I have a DVD (Boz Scagg's Greatest Hits "Live") of Boz doing this, and his other excellent tunes (Look What You've Done To Me is another super ballad), at the Great American Music Hall, San Francisco.

Would have loved to be as fortunate as you and saw him "live".

He had two terrific keyboardists with him in San Fransisco, and, the bass player, Matt Bissonette, was absolutely astonishing.

Boz is definitely one of the greats.

Almost off-the-topic

Since I have retired my song list has changer radically;
It is no longer what is effective or what they would like to hear, now it’s all about me. I get to play all the songs that I love. One of the blessing of getting older.

John....I can relate very well to your post...I've decided to take this winter off (for personal gigs), and it is so nice to just sit down and play a tune without analyzing whether it will work well in a gig context.

It's sheer joy to play without that pressure.

Good points, Ian and John. I think we all have our 'other' side. Of the five 'new' songs I listed earlier only the last two are gigworthy(?) for the type of gigs that I do. The others are just for home consumption only.
