Typical arranger performance though... Play the lead loud enough to basically drown out the drums.

Sometimes it makes me wonder why any of us actually WANT live sounding drums, if we stick the lead over them to the point where you can't even TELL what they sound like... Listen to any pop music (and especially dance music), and see if the drums are EVER obscured by anything else.

Agree. Even if the intention was to showcase the lead sound, the drums should have been louder in the mix to give a more over all techno feel.
And, IMO would have helped in showcasing the lead sound. Sometimes, it takes other instruments and a proper mix to give the true feeling of a sound.

Why bash the guys atyle, its his interpretation and if he wants to keep the volume of the drums down to bring his own lead more to the attention then i can live with his arrangement.

Its a great performance on a $700 keyboard.

What a great little keyboard is this Roland. I had one sold it because of the lack of editing styles but with the new tools I will buy him again but this time the European version. Worth every penny this keyboard.

Well fair play to the guy. That sounded pretty great even with the lead being so loud. I'm listening to it through my Studio Monitors.

The D-Beam function looks bloody stupid though. Give me a KORG Ribbon Controller any day over that. It's bad enough that the general public don't really believe we play keyboards and to have one hand floating a foot above the keyboard in the air is quite silly.

Regards
James

They've been using these types of controllers on electronica for years (AirFX, for instance, not to mention the theramin ). Nobody worries about that. Main thing is the connection between visual gestures and something you can actually hear.

I'm a fan of what Bjørk's electronica guys do...

The general public doesn't believe we are playing the keyboards if we go out front and put on our chicken hats and have the sequencer play the song If we stay behind the keys and play with one hand and use the other for the D-Beam, no problem! At least they can see us doing SOMETHING...

Oh come on Diki, you can't be serious. Nobody in the techno/house scene wants live drums. You're not even hearing a natural kit in this demo, let alone a "live" kit.

I think it's a good demo that shows the GW-8 is closing the gap between arrangers and synths even in the lower-priced keyboardranges.

Sorry.., but I think Korg has been closing the gap well before Roland. The Korg PA series when introduced hit the market with a Triton based sound engine.., and very detailed patch editing. Even the low end PA-50 is more "synth" than the GW-8.

Man..., you guys read way too much into things. Diki wasn't talking about the drums for this style needing to sound live.

If you noticed Diki "started another paragraph" and pointed out an issue he has with arranger demos on YouTube IN GENERAL. This issue has been brought up by him in the past and he just made note of it again.

I think Diki obviously knows drums in this style don't sound live. He's right too.., they are pushed way back in the mix. For those of you who DON'T play this style music.., the DRUMS and BEAT are essential and SHOULD stand out.

Thanks squeak. At least you got the point...

It's not about whether the drums are live or not. It's whether you can hear them at all

The vast majority of arranger players SAY they want 'live' sounding drums. But, OTOH, the vast majority of arranger demos I hear have them so far back in the mix that, in essence, who can TELL what they sound like..?

I remember the response to the great Audya demos as being predominantly, 'they sound great, but the drums are mixed pretty upfront'. Fact is, they sound great BECAUSE the drums are mixed pretty up front And, in all fairness, you mix whatever you are playing, whether Yamaha, Korg or Roland THAT much up front, and you will get that sound (or pretty close to it). Arranger drums are MUCH better than they used to be. But you have to mix them up front for anyone to tell...

Play with a live drummer, and see if you can EVER drown him out... Best of luck on that one!

If you want to sound 'live', whether it is natural OR electronic drums, give them a chance to cut through what you are playing. Your dancers will thank you for it...

Well maybe "we" didn't because you commented on the drums in THIS video and then wondered why people want LIVE drums in the first place.

I'm a drummer originally I know what kind of noise I can produce LOL

Some brands will require style-editing by default to do that. Some brands think it's ok to make the drummer sound as if he's playing in a room 3 blocks away.

Just take most of the reverb off, take off any master compression, then crank him up! You'd be surprised...
