I have a Shure SM58 and an AT Pro4L, both pretty good dynamic mics for me. I'd like to get a new mic for less than $200. What would you suggest? My Shure doesn't seem as hot (gain) as my bandmate's, is that just an idosyncracy of the mic?

Hi Cassp,

Trouble with the Sm58 is that it's a 30 year old design and even with the beta 58 they just changed the gain characteristics but left the capsule and electronics inside pretty much the same as the original.

Shure still sell a lot, but, really, it's only by reputation not on performance.

The 58 has NEVER been a particularly "hot" mic anyway.

Give the EV N/D 767A a try.. I have only just swapped over to it after both an SM58 beta, an sm87a beta and the AKG D880.

I now have very little in the way of effects over the mic, it's simply brilliant and sounds exceptional just by itself..Coupled with the Harmony M it is sensational. Best mic investment I made.

I think they are under $200 in the US, I got mine for $220AUD (which is about $160 USD).

No question in my mind--Samson Q7. Inexpensive, outstanding feedback resistance, incredible frequency response and built to last.

I bought one of these based on Gary's suggestion. It's become my favorite mic.
