I use a thing called a "Far Outlet". It was sold by Galaxy Audio. It is a battery (about the size of a motorcycle battery) with a sine-wave, pure power inverter. I have done live keyboard jobs and DJ jobs with it, and it can power a keyboard, small PA etc. for many hours ...

Not sure if these are still available . . .

This may sound stupid, but if I buy a generator, as in this: http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/stor...03+90401+524798

Do I need to get gas? Or does it come with Gas?

Sorry if this is a stupid question...

Your going to have to buy your own gas....
& I would also check how quiet that model is ......the selected Honda models are the quietest.....this is a very important feature especially when your performing music.

Shouldn't the venue be responsible for adequate power for the event? Why should this be YOUR problem?

BTW, you are not considering BUYING one, are you? So what's available for renting in your area is probably the main thing...

If it were me, I would tell the venue how many amps (electricity) roughly you need (how big is the PA and lights?), and then I would run anything like keyboards, effects, mixers (anything that doesn't consume a LOT of power, unlike power amps and lights) on a UPS battery backup system (plugged into the generator), so a brownout or surge doesn't damage your gear...

If you rent a system, make sure you also rent maybe 100 foot of heavy duty power cable, too, so you can get the generator WELL away from the performance area

Shim,

Generators are not the way to go. They are noisy, load restricted, frequently surge, and could cause lots of equipment damage. Heavy-duty DC to AC inverters are your best bet. No gas, no noise, very reliable. I performed some campground parties where the closest outlet was more than 600 feet away and the inverter worked flawlessly using a large truck battery for the primary power source. Keep in mind, however, that high-wattage inverters are not cheap. Therefore, if the job is a one-shot deal, I would tell them to provide you with electricity or find some an acoustic country band.
