"90% of all jazz is half improvisation. The other half is the part people play while others are playing something they never played with anyone who played that part. So if you play the wrong part, its right. If you play the right part, it might be right if you play it wrong enough. But if you play it too right, it's wrong"- Yogi Berra

I'm not sure if that statement is right or wrong ? Something seems left out, which may make it right ... If it is right, than I think there is nothing left to say ...

Hopefully, one day you'll "fiquire" out how to spell and play at the same time.

It's all about Right brain/Left brain. And then there is the arranger player, who apparently has a Middle brain (preferring to be neither creative NOR learn to play ).

Just because you own an arranger keyboard, doesn't mean you can't play.
Now back to my middle brain thoughts....

OUCH. Chas. Actually, right/left brain theory is at the heart of my approach to teaching Interpersonal Communications. The focus is to get every person involved to realize how they're oriented and make them realize that, depending on where they're coming from, they're much better prepared for success in some areas than others.

People who think they don't have the brain power to succeed in one area often find they have the brain power, it's just configured like a Mac, not a PC.

The intent is to prevent people from striving and failing at things they just don't have the aptitude for.

Really satisfying work. Students even developed/refined a computer test. After the participant answers a battery of querstions, the brain is drawn out showing the percentage of activity on each side. It's bogus sience, but somewhat appropriate and fun. It gets the point across.

I just realized that Chas has an arranger & Russ has an arranger and they both play jazz..
Please disregard my defending of the arranger keyboard owner...

It turns anti-clockwise, unless I look off to the side and use peripheral vision and then I can make it turn it the other way. How does that happen?
Does this mean I have to start playing Jazz?

You have to have 2 left arms to play jazz...

BTW... why am I spending so much time
ON-LINE ? I've been working in a Piano Store the last 6 months... A lot of down time.

That's so funny. I don't know any "official" jazz songs - but I have this name as being an amazing jazz player. All I do is make things up. I never do the same thing twice, because I can't remember what I did five minutes after I did it.

I just wish she'd come out of the shadows. How does she keep from getting dizzy? Is that why she switches from clockwise to "anti-" clockwise?

I'm left handed; does that count for anything?

UD, are you sure? How do you account for the fact that my wife and I see it differently at the same time. Try it with another person.

I tried it too, it changes direction on its own. And you don't have to stare or concentrate, I Left it open and went to another page and when I came back it was going in the opposite direction. I was going to time it to see if it does it on a schedule but then thought to myself I must be crazy I have better things to do. maybe not..
about 35 seconds the first time (mississippi 1 etc.) about 30 the second

In 1998, a study suggested that approximately 7 to 10 percent of the adult population was left-handed.

Some studies argue a correlation between left-handedness and creativity/intelligence.

Left-handedness, in comparison to the general population, also appears to occur more frequently in both identical and fraternal twins, and several groups of individuals with neurological disorders (such as people with epilepsy, Down's Syndrome, autism, mental retardation and dyslexia).

From Wikipedia.

Think about this Right/left brained thing. I only see clockwise motion, and I am the "poster-person" for the right-brained set...spacy, optimistic, thinks overview instead of details, etc. Those like Don and Dave are safely in the middle, with good attention to detail, but still in the sensible creative side. They are in the most versatile, well-adjusted group, with successes in fields requiring either linear or abstract thinking ability. Engineer types only see counter-clockwise activity and think in a linear fashion. Left brainers just can't think abstractly and usually don't get along with or understand abstract philosophers. musicians, advertising creative directors, etc. Extreme right brainers are the most creative and crazy of the lot (think of the most creative scientists, musicians, writers, etc.).

Not sure of the origin of the graphic, but right/left brain theory is a valid, interesting scientific field, used in organizational management to define the problems between, say, a sales force or marketing department and the plant manager, accounting or engineering department.

Knowing that right brainers process information like and prefer Macs, whereas left-brainers think like PC's helps manage different types of people.

Some differences between folks here can even be explained by differences in how we process an apply information.

Chas, you always surprise me in how similar we think. Your awareness and understanding of "right/left" brain issues (an area of concentration in my academic career) is a good example.

"righty" Russ

Take Wikipedia with a grain 'ary' of salt.

Never has starting an argument been easier than to click the word "edit" on a Web site and rewrite history, science or a current event.

The fact remains that 'anyone' may anonymously add to, subtract or alter existing pieces of information within seconds on Wikipedia. Professors are well aware of the site's nameless authors and as such, most will not accept Wikipedia as a valid source. What does that mean for students, besides the notion they may have to actually do some research?

Personally, I would not rely on Wikipedia as a trusted reliable source for information, regardless of topic. In other words, it is a hit or miss proposition in my opinion and should be taken with a grain of salt. I admire your fortitude though Ian.

Best,
Mike

I think being left-handed is a big help in playing RIGHT-HANDED guitar and bass (better strength and speed on the fret-board).
