To all you lucky people that have owned ALL the top keyboards...Tyros, G70 , SD1, PAiX, Genesys...
If you could only keep one , which one would it be?

Politics aside, just a gut reaction...Let's here it!!!

SD-1 Still sounds great & they keep upgrading the OS without you having to buy a New Keyboard every year or two.

Ok my Umbrella is Up :

Well I haven’t owned all the High end Arrangers, but I have tried most of them at some time or other, and I have to say that there has not been one so far, that would make me change my Wersi Abacus with its OAS system, which to me just feels like it is part of me. (It’s also continuously upgradeable without needing to change the Instrument)
An interesting point is that when I first tried the Abacus, after the first few notes I played, I new straight away that this was THE ONE.

I haven't had all of the top keyboards but I have had and demoed a few, and the one for me is the Wersi Abacus with its OAS system.

Sounds and styles are always upgradeable and it is a computer intencive keyboard.

can I infer from Simon's reply that it doesn't have to be an arranger? If it does have to be - My Tyros midied to my Korg. (tyorg lol) IF it doesn't have to be an arranger, well then it's a no brainer. Receptor. A rack full of them.

If I had to keep one arranger keyboard it would definitely be my G1000. Fair enough I've got an SD1 and Tyros 2 coming this Tuesday, but for ease of use in a live situation the G1000 wins hands down. It's such an easy instrument to get along with. Decent styles (loads of them without going overboard with fancy twiddly bits or ridden in FX), sounds are very good to say how old it is getting on and the keys are great to the touch. This still has to be one of the best for 2nd hand deals if you can locate one.

As arrangers go, I've only ever had my Korg i30 (ol' reliable) with ih harmonizer and I'm quite happy to keep it. It does everything I want.

Right now I would say my laptop with OMB and all of the sound modules, soft synths, and effects in it. I'd part with my PA80 before I'd let the AJ2005 system go. Even though I have less bells and whistles as far as onboard controls go vs using a hardware arranger, I've become more comfortable actually playing "arranger style" with the Motif and OMB than I am with the PA80. Maybe less really is more....

I'd also part with the Motif ES if I had to, though I'm a litle more reluctant as it works nicely as a controller and hosts my PLG series plugins. I also like the groove factory and step sequencer functions. The internal voices are fine too, but I don't use them as much as I once did, except as lead voices sometimes when using OMB.

Of the ones I've owned, it must be Ketron SD1, because that's what I'm playing now.
I also enjoyed the Tyros a lot.
The keyboard that was WAY ahead of its time was Technics KN2000, but of course it's history now.
Another such "precocious" keyboard was Yamaha PSR8000, the first to have a really workable vocal processor and harmonizer.
Can't compare the latest Korg, Roland or GEM because they aren't available to me to audition. Also, the weight keeps me from seriously considering them.

flr2006 software based arranger system.

Things are starting to happen. The NI B4II and Sonar 5 are on their way. The NI Bandstand should arrive soon thereafter.

....things are just getting better all the time. I bet I would even pick the Rikki2006 and the AJ2006 software systems above all other hardware systems out there.

I can't help it....it just works for me!!!

PA1X Pro... for now

Maybe I'll change my mind once Tyros2 shows up on my rack, but I can tell you one thing... I have never owned a bigger keyboard than 61 keys... PA1X Pro is my first "seventy sixer"... and I am never ever again buying 61 keys!!!
(I need Tyros2 to complete my studio... but as soon as 76 keys Tyros2 or 3 comes out... it will be mine ),

cheers,

If Michel Voncken don´t need 76 keys for playing a Arranger Keyboard, I also needn´t.

I stay with my last: TYROS
(or Tyros2 when it am for sale in Brazil)

Think yourself lucky dnj you don't have a Mediastation in a Gator case. That thing weighs about 92lb altogether and is impossible on your own. I count myself lucky I haven't got it anymore hehe.

I remember dragging my CP25 electric piano to gigs in the early 80's. What a beast. Made my Hohner Clavinet feel pretty light and my Poly Six like a paper weight. Today's boards feel like feather weights in comparison. Still, the CP25 was lighter than the custom speakers we had made for the soundsystem.

Back then a lot of KB players used Bass amps, me included. I had a trusty old Fender Bassman when I started out. What was heavy were the cabinets. Originally each had 2 15 inch Altec Lansing woofers, mid range horns, and piezos. I had to redesign so that each cabinet only had one woofer, and even then they were still pretty heavy.

I'm not a particularly big guy ( 5'8"), but back then I was in rather good shape at a rock solid 185 lbs or so, and I managed ok. Now.. the weight is still there but it's redistributed itself more than just a bit.

As much as I like my AJ2006 system, it is higher maintenance than a dedicated hardware and perhaps it's more suited for studio work. In the studio it outshines anything I've ever played in my life. It's also become really easy for me to play it as an arranger using the Es as a controller. Still, for simplicity and more bells and whistles "in front of me ", I'm still considering a new hardware arranger just for live work and will rule nothing out at this point, not even the top enders.

AJ

Don't remind me. I used to gig with a Technics E66 (and later an EX70 then a GN9) which were all professionally cut in half to allow us to carry them. They had special made trolley so we could load them. Plus all of the amplification, kit and other bit's and pieces - makes todays keyboards look like feather weights

Anyway as far as which one - I'm a little torn between my KN7K and PA1X. Love them both.

In an ideal world I'd love to own them all

Hiya Frank,
wasn't game to mention Rikki2006 arranger system. haahaa It's definately held my interest for longer than any of my keyboards ever have, mainly because it's upgradeable.
best wishes
