OK so I finally bought a new keyboard. It's the New Yamaha PSR-S500. It's a relatively cheapy at a discounted price of $699.00

I've actually got the original PSR 500 that I bought a few years ago too.

So why this one? It's one of the first I've seen in a less than $700 keyboard where you don't have to put in Numbers for Voices and Styles. Press a button say for pianos, like on the Technics and the list of pianos appears in the display. Then use the dial to select the one you want. It's more like the high end models.

It also takes a USB thumb drive of any size to save and load data, midi songs and styles or a USB Floppy Drive.

I downloaded a bunch of styles that were from different Yamaha keyboards and they've all loaded and played so far although loading is a little cluncky.

With two 12 watt amps, two 12cm and two 3cm speakers the sound quality is a bit better than I expected.

Finally there are 150 built in styles, 283 panel voices, 361 XGlite voices and 32 note polyphony.

I'm not plannig on getting rid of the Technic PR54 anytime soon but this little baby is a good buy.

Hi heather,
congratulations on your new keyboard. You'd probably notice quite a difference in quality between your new S500 & your old PSR500 .

I've currently got the PSR1500 (& an sd1+)& it's a great little keyboard.

Wise move hanging onto your Technic. If there's ever a keyboard that I do regret selling, it was my kn7.

best wishes

Thanks Dnj, will do.

Rikki,
Yes there is a big difference between the two and still I would not recommend the S500 for really critical ears. The KN2400 and KN2600 still have better sound but they were most expensive to start with.

I was looking at a Casio WK3800 and while the S500 is only a couple hundred more there is a really big difference in sound quality even though the WK3800 has a lot more features. And for me to compare the PR54 with 80 watts of sound to the 12 watts on the S500 is out of the question. Still I was looking for something to travel with that had good sound, an easy to use interface and didn't cost a lot.

Now I guess I'll try to sell the old PSR500 at a give away price.

Good Day to Both of you.

Hi Heather,
I used to run my DGX 305 thru my Clavinova's speakers. Gave it a much better overall sound than it's onboard speakers.

I think I even had it midied to the Clav at one stage, via my laptop. The Dgx didn't have dedicated midi sockets, just usb, made it a bit awkward.

Another thing too, is that there's probably lots more styles available for psr's than
for casio's.

Enjoy.

Hi Rikki,
I would certaily think that to be true and with a 2GB thumb drive I should be able to store them all in one place instead of on all the stupid floppies I have for the PR54.

I'll be back in Style Heaven again. LOL

Hi Alfredo,
I did a google search of PSR Yamaha Styles and I found several sites where I could get styles. Just look for them.

Hi Zuki,

Yea, I lived there for 49 years and to me it's Cincinnasty.

It used to be a nice place but like most big cities it became a big wasteland.

I'm glad you like the site. I've been neglecting it. I guess I should do some updates to it.
