You have a few alternatives .

KAwai L1 . A little nicer looking than P120 imo .

Casio AP28 .

Kawai ESX1

Korg makes an inexpensive digital piano .

Roland F90 or F100 . All of these pianos are in the same price range !

Good Luck ....... dano ...........

Gerbo,
I played the P-120 a few weeks ago.. It is a pretty nice digital. The action felt great to me.. It wasn't too stiff nor was it too light. The only thing I disliked was the internal speakers... To me the sound was a little too bright, and didn't have enough bottom in the lower octaves.. The salesman felt the same way so he ran it through a decent monitor system and it sounded much better. I played the silver model and cosmetically it's quite modern, and some might find it doesn't fit into their rooms decor.. However there is another model that's black and has a darker simulated wood to go better with some surroundings...

Hi Gerbo,

Check out the Yamaha P-80. I spent quite a bit of time listening and playing digital pianos recently. In the end, I bought the P-80. Through good monitors, I like it better than anything else in it's price range ($900). The action is great, but I have been a Yamaha player for many years. I have always favoured their feel and sounds. The P-120 was too bright for me though. It was supposed to improve on the P-80 sounds, but to me,after many demos, I went with the P-80. Actually, the Roland FP-3 was my close second choice. Very nice action and sound. I recommend you give it serious consideration. bst of luck whatever you decide. Brian

I have a P-80. Great action. Very nice piano voice when I used my headphone. Sounds coming out of the speaker tends to be a bit on the mellow side. At $900, I have nothing to complain about - and you can get one for less depend on how hard you deal with the sales people at the local store.

If anyone has a good monitor for this, I would love to try it out. Thanks.

I agree with B2 and Rhumba... the P80 is an excellent choice. I recently AB'd the P80 and the P120. Despite the Yamaha promos for the P120 having three layers and key-off and damper resonance samples, the P80 still sounds more convincing. If you hold a chord on the P120, it quickly becomes dead sounding, whereas the P80 continues to sing with nice randomness. The P80 also has a nice Rhodes. The only piano sound that I prefer is the Bosendorfer for GigaStudio.

I also have found the sound coming from the speakers tend to be mellower, and I can't explain it. It's not bothering me, but I have yet to find a setting that really captures what I hear through a good pair of headsets. if anyone has an explaination that would help, I'm all ears. I'd like to make it a bit more crisp. B2

Based on some brilliant sounding MP3s, I picked up a Roland VX-5050 and SRX-02 64 Meg Piano expansion. It is a real shame, the piano from middle C down is possbly the best digital I have heard. Unfortunately, the top half gets progressively worse as you go up the scale. The top octave positively reeks. Thank heavens Guitar Center has a generous return policy. I guess for now, the best piano sound going is the EastWest Steinway B for GigaStudio.

Time for me to eat some crow. After spending more time comparing the Roland SRX-02 piano with the Steinway B and Bosendorfer for GigaStudio, I ended up giving top marks to the Roland. It does have some problems, particularly in the upper octaves, and the Bose and Steinway are virtually faultless. But when all is said and done, the Roland just seems more "real". I find it easier to suspend disbelief and forget that I'm playing a digital imitation rather than an acoustic piano. I'll be keeping the Roland after all.
