Friends,

An interesting thought crossed my mind last week (when I came across the story of the Bose PAS not being stereo).

The PAS truely doesn't work well with stereo equiptment, BUT here is what I did (and it works ... to an extent)!

The PAS has 3 separate AMPs (one for the Base, one for the top cylinder and one for the bottom cylinder). So if you plug the LEFT and RIGHT outputs (of say TYROS2) into AMP1 and AMP2 the left and right signals do come out separately but as NORTH/UP and SOUTH/DOWN signals!! To appriciate this, you would have to lay down horizontal (like you're asleep).

Now this is the wiered part ... if you place the BOSE horizontally (say on 2 keyboard stands or so) and the towers are at least 3 meters appart (you will have to get some cables to like towers 1 and 2 CORRECTLY), then you do get most of the stereo effect with minimum phase cancellation - but here is the catch. You loose the close to 180 degrees signal spread (left to right), but you now have it North to South ...

kinda like this:-

|
|
+========= +=========| [Sub]
|
|

(top spkr) <-5m-> (bottom spkr with amp)

^
Dispersion is now | (North-South)
v

and not < - >!! (East to West).

Now this layout is also ideal when you have 2 floors (or a balcony above) as the people above now hear everything too.

But what about those to the side?

A.J, we discussed this briefly on the phone, but it would seem that if there is truly stereo separation, then there would be no phase cancellation, whether the tower was vertical or horizontal.
I tried the Bose with Hank's PSR3000, and I really couldn't tell there was much of a problem. But then I was on a job and haven't had a chance to A-B compare with another system.
Very interesting, though.

Aj,

You really had me when you said; "Now this is the wiered part ".

Excellent thinking my friend. I love it!

But, wouldn't the dispersion still be stereo if it were mounted vertical since the the top and bottom would radiate alternatively giving the sensation of stereo?

Great thinking...

I was understood that the way the Bose PAS worked was the 24 drivers covered different frequencies, so that each driver did not have to work that hard, because it only had to hand a certain freq. This is why it seems that feedback is not that much of a problem, As for the 3 amp system this is true. but not as a left top, right bottom and sub for the third.

I have set-up Bose PAS for a stereo set-up and it works, with a bigger sweet spot than conventional because of the massive spread.

But the whole idea behind the PAS is that each instrument should be coming from a different area, so the PAS was designed for the group where each person had their own system to give the real stereo sound because each inst, coming from a different area creating a cleaner direct sound.

I used the PAS in every situation and I have only had a couple of problems, but nothing that would make me go back

The whole concept of the Bose is what we in the old days called a Line Source Speaker. All drivers placed in a vertical line i.e. LINE SOURCE was used in all PA applications that required coverage over a large area.
Laid on it's side destroys completely the design concept of the PAS.

Here's an idea.
Why not use the Bose PAS the way it was intended?

It is a "Personal Amplifying System". It does a fantastic job standing straight up.

Frankie nailed it when he said, "....the whole idea behind the PAS is that each instrument should be coming from a different area, so the PAS was designed for the group where each person had their own system to give the real stereo sound because each inst, coming from a different area creating a cleaner direct sound.
