Friend's Yamaha psr740 stops playing when playing a midi from floppy, reboots. Would you think this would be the floppy drive going bad? Where to buy one?

FWIW, I think he already replaced the power supply long ago on this arranger.

Bill,

If the keyboard actually turns itself off, then back on, the problem is not likely the floppy disk. This sounds like a power supply problem. However, if just the song stops playing, then begins to replay, and the keyboard's main power remains on, then the first thing to do would be check the floppy drive and give it a good cleaning with a floppy drive cleaning kit, which is available at most computer stores and Radio Shack.

Good Luck,

Gary

Thanks Gary. If it is power supply, why would it only happen when playing midi (from floppy)? More power required or something?

Bill, does it happen with a particular song, or all songs? Does it do it when you change locations in the house?
It does sound like the power supply to me. I suppose it might pull more power when the disk is being accessed.

If the power goes out completely on the keyboard, then I'd suggest what Gary wrote. Check the power supply. If the wal-wart itself is good, it could be the connection within the keyboard.

If the power doesn't go out and the midi file just stops, then it could be a bad midi or dirty drive.

I've had a few midi's lock up on my boards--there are some crappy midi's out there Hopefully the problem is only minor.

With that particular model keyboard, there's a slight power surge when the floppy drive is activated. If all the lights go out, it's likely the power supply, or as Squeak said, possibly the connection where the power supply connects to the keyboard itself.

Hope this is of some help,

Gary

It's an external power supply, yes?

When you replaced it, did you get a Yamaha, or some generic? (It IS the correct amperage and voltage, yes?)

If not, get a REAL proper PS

If you wiggle the power cord while you are playing normally, does it power down or re-boot?

If so, replace the PS or solder a new plug to the end (and cut off 2 or 3 inches to get rid of stressed wiring)

Try to replace with a power supply with the correct voltage and polarity, but maybe 30-50% MORE amperage (this will help during extra current load while the Floppy spins up.......), this will not hurt your keyboard, whereas too little amperage WILL.......

If it only re-boots with certain disks and not others, use a computer to copy the SMF to a fresh disk and see if it still reboots.

If it still reboots only certain SMFs after a copy to a new disk, it's a corrupted SMF. Try loading it into a computer sequencer, look for any wierd sys-ex or controller codes the PSR doesn't respond to, and delete them, and re-save it.

Hope this helps......
