What a day it has been for the music biz.

It may have escaped large portions of the planet, but today, up here in Canada, was held the biggest one-day music event in north American history with an attendance in the region of 500,000 people. The concert, which has been dubbed 'Sarstock', was put on to let everyone know that Toronto is a safe place to visit after what has been a scary summer due to the outbreak of SARS earlier in the season.

Headlining the bill were the Rolling Stones and, in addition, was a great array of talent including AC/DC, Rush, The Guess Who, The Isley Brothers and many others.

There I was, still caught up in the euphoria of it all when I just started to surf for a few moments and saw the headline 'Sam Phillips dead at 80'.

What a debt is owed by so many to the one man who, beyond any shadow of a doubt, was the leading catalyst in the birth of rock'n'roll. The man without whom rock'n'roll may never have come together from its early fragmented components, and to have left this earth on the same day that his 'baby' achieved an attendance milestone shows that the man never lost his sense of timing.

Thank you, Mr. Phillips. May you rest in peace.
