I have the HDR board installed..Question is,when they state that a 4 track recorder is available,is there an ACTUAL hard disk in the unit itself,or(this is what I believe),I have to obtain a external SCSI hard drive to store my audio,and the board is just a means to retrieve an outside signal?

I tried to record a track(I don't have any unit yet to hook up to the SCSI port)and the unit tells me basically "Can't audio record"
as I start the sequencer..

You got that right. You need some type of media to store your digital audio. A scsi zip, Jaz, or fixed hard drive will do the job. Let me know if you got any more questions.
