Hi,

I know this is unrelated to arranger keyboards, so forgive me for that.

A friend brought a video camera to a gig my band JazzItUp did last week. Click
HERE to have a look and listen.

Hope you like it,

Dave

P.S. Any guesses on the changes being played under the familiar melody? We did the actual song earlier in the evening and our sax player threw in a little of the TV theme into his solo. So for this last song of the evening we decided to do the complete merging of the two songs.

Great stuff...love the tune..."Meet the Flinstones"...nice arrangement...cool call and response with the sax.

Nice job. It's so nice to see an honest-to-god TWO-handed piano player these days.

Yeah, chas.... You all know my views about HAVING to give up my left hand to the tyranny of inputting chords over and over again, when a Chord Sequencer would mean you only have to do it ONCE, and then you can go and play two-fisted for all the subsequent choruses.

Anybody that CAN play two-fisted should be screaming for this 'feature' but the silence is deafening! Surely there can't be THAT few two handed players here..?

Great and very energic performance! What is your keyboard setup? I could recognize the Promega 3 (I wouldn't expect you to play anything else ), but what is the small keyboard above it?

Kind regards,
Tommy

Hi guys,
Thanks for the kind words.
To comment on Diki's post, I use Piano Mode on the Genesys almost exclusively when playing with styles. Piano Mode scans the entire keyboard for chord recognition. And I also assign a footswitch to Chord Freeze which basically defeats the chord recognition while the switch is engaged making it possible to play all over the keyboard and be as wildly erratic as I want without the auto-chord changes going crazy.
Chris, I am sure there will be another pro arranger/workstation coming, but I know of nothing at this very moment.
Best Regards,
Dave

Dave,

Thanks for the clip. Good work. I'll try to get down to see you soon. Tell JB I said "hi".

Diki -

I love to play my left hand chords. I spent an entire lifetime attempting to master theory. You know, there is a lot of imagination and creativity that goes along with arranger playing. It's not about just playing chords.

However, I would like to explore the feature you speak of....

Wow, I didn't even notice that! Actually the time was around 11:00PM. I guess the street lights must have kicked on during that song. Good observation.

Thoroughly enjoyed the clip. I was playing drums in jazz groups in the late 60's. Sold my drums in the 70's. But...if your drummer ever quits...let me know. I will get another set just to play with your group.
Eddie

PS
Wish I had your keyboard chops.

You the Man Dave! I'm sure if you came back to the Philadelphia area you'd get plenty of bookings. Seems to me that there would be a greater demand for Country music than your good Jazz where you are.

Dave,
How about you posting a tune or two using your Genesys XP? By the time I get round-to-it, Donnie may be retired.
Ciao,
Jerry

Hi Jerry,

If I can get the time over the weekend I will try to post a short video of the Genesys XP for you.

Best Regards,

Dave

P.S. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. And you are right, there are not too many venues for jazz around here and the clubs that are known for jazz are pretty locked up with house players. I have been struggling to get my group booked. A problem that I see is that the word jazz is actually a stumbling block for many club owners and patrons alike. I have tried to focus on tunes that are recognizable so more people will enjoy our music. But I think I made a mistake in naming the band JazzItUp. It seems that the word jazz either conjures up the stereotype of a frenzied jumble of fast notes being played by a drugged out old time bebop player or strangely these days the term is also used for something more close to hip hop. “!?!”
But I’ll keep forging ahead in the hopes that good music will eventually come back around into favor. I would love to come back to Philadelphia, I think. When I lived there I was in a great trio. Played mostly out of Real Book 1 and 2. And even if some of the patrons weren’t really into jazz, they were musically literate enough to understand the effort being made on stage and appreciated the accomplishment of learning to play an instrument well. And they were attentive and applauded. OK, enough complaining, I'm bringing myself down.

Dave...sadly, it's true. I have to really watch my reference to playing jazz, except at the "snoot" restaurants, where use of the term "jazz" is part of the image.
