OK folks - I finally got it on my site. You can visit www.daveboydmusic.com and see pics of my new setup with the kn7k and the bose. You'll also see my custom laptop/mic boom rig and if you venture into the "songs" page, you can hear the manhatten transfer treatment of "A Nightingale Sang in Berkely Square".

My web guy did this all last night, and some of the descriptions are incorrect under the pics, but you'll get the idea!

The "Nightingale" song was done with the digitech VR in real time with no overdubs, playing the 9000PRO as piano/bass/drums only. (Manual bass)

Hope you like it. I have a loud "sssss" sounmd that I want to edit out, but haven't gotten 'round to it yet. Be kind.

The Digitech VR sounds pretty good (and imo similar sounding to the Digitech Vocalist Workstation Ex), but I'm wondering how it compares to the TC Helicon Voice Works. I recall you mentioning that the TC Helicon VoiceWorks sounds better. What differences in sound quality do you notice?

I just purchased the TC Helicon VoiceWorks unit but haven't had a chance to test it out yet. I hope to find time (this weekend or Monday) after I get back from celebrating the Chinese New Year with my family.

Uncle Dave, in the meantime, realizing that you own both the Digitech VR & TC Helicon Voiceworks units (right?), any chance you could record a short A/B comparison test between the two units, and post the results, so we can hear the difference?

Scott

Well...... I no longer own the TC harmonizer. I sold it B4 Christmas, so an A/B sound byte is out of the question.
Here's my findings:
1) The TC has a superior effects section
(not so important for live work)
2) The TC had a cleaner signal
(again, more noticable in a studio setting)
3) The TC took up 2 rack spaces .... I prefer the smaller, 1 space unit. I bought the Quintet late last year but could not use a conventional footswitch to trigger the harmonies, so I returned it.

The benifits for live work were marginal, so I stuck with the Digitech. Through a PA system, the difference would be pretty minimal, but in a controlled, studio envirnment, you'll appreciate the quieter signal from the TC.

UD, hmmm , my TC 'VoiceWorks' unit only takes up 'one' space. Was your TC vocalizer unit by any chance the 'Voice Prism'?

Though I haven't made any kind of decision yet, I'll plan to stick with the 'built in' Tyros vocalizer for live work and reserve the TC 'VoiceWorks' for studio recording. I'll let you know my impression of the 'VoiceWorks' soon. - Scott

Scott,
Yup - I had a voice prisym(sp?)
That unit took a normal on/on F/S but was too big to fit in my rack. It also has a nasty habit of shutting off during program changes. Something I couldn't deal with on stage. I like to change the harmonies from unison to 4 parts ...... like the Letterman did.

UD,
Very nice indeed. I was actually in Berkeley Square last year ( and had tea at the Ritz though I saw no angels Very nice it was too.)

I used to own the VR. Sold it on when I fast came to the conclusion that if what is going in is not up to par then what comes out definately will not be! In the right hands I think harmonisers can sound amazing but if you don't have a strong voice to start with ALL the flaws in your performance will be amplified to excrutiating proportions.

Of course I still have not learned my lesson. (that would be far to easy ) I am contemplating still the purchase of a TC unit. Ever hopeful of that elusive ingredient to transform my vocals.

Anyhow I enjoyed your Mp3 very much.
One quick question, In the pic the Bose has just the one speaker and the sub (unless my eyes are failing along with everything else!). Is this the setup or are there two seperate speakers?

Very best to you
Tony

Tony,
The system as pictured is complete with one woofer. A second bass speaker is an expanded package and I'll most likely go for it because it will balance out the power ratings. The 3 amps provide 250 watts each, and i suspect that the bass amp is not at full power with only one woofer.

As is .... it still kicks some serious butt !

Ud never ceases to amaze me. I thought i was the only musician besides a couple of Jazz guys that did this tune.

Dave what about "Everything Happens To Me"
"Polka Dots And Moonbeams?"

Wow! I'm dealing with a real pro here. I'm gonna sound even better when I get my laptop.

oooooo !! That does look nice doesn't it? Thanx Brick, Thanx UD. That has got to be sooooo slick to set up, and on top of that, you could string a line up between them to hang a sweaty shirt up to dry between sets!
Seriously..Your set-up looks great UD, thanx for the shots, and good luck with the system. ...L

Dave,

Looks like a nice, clean setup. Hopefully, I'll have the opportunity to hear it sometime in the near future. The MP3 with the Digitech VR was awesome. Anyone that hears it and says the VR sounds robotic should have their hearing checked.

Thanks again,

Gary

Thanx for simplifying the link Ziggy ! I never thought of that.
To quote Scout : (Mockingbird)
"Hey Boo"

Polkadots is one of my staples, although I must admit, the first time I heard it was a John Denver arrangement ! Remember, I'm just a pup! These old standards are WAaaaaaay before my time. I'm a flower child from the 60s ! The last wave of baby boomers.

Dave,

You keep getting me in trouble. I'm gonna have to quit hanging around with you. You're a bad example for me.

Now you're telling me John Denver did Polkadots and Moonbeams, Now I gotta go to kazza and see if I can locate it. I have to hear that. Dave am I gonna like it or laugh?

Jonny Cash did it too?

Uncle Dave,

I'm having trouble connecting to www.daveboydmusic.com. Our network administrator says it is your site not letting me in. I was really looking forward to hearing you do "Nightingale Sang". It is one of my favorite songs. Is anyone else having trouble?

Tom

Yes - I can't get into some parts of the site either. That link to the "contact.htm" page gives me a "forbidden to access this area" message.

I have to admit that the first time I heard PD&MB was also the John Denver version, and he did it quite well. It's on my songlist too.

I believe the problem is with UD's server. I had no problem accessing the site last night, but today, it get an error message that says "Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /contact.htm on this server.

Additionally, a 403 Forbidden error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request."

Don't ya' jest love computers!

Server's still down folks - sorry.
BTW - I picked up the second woofer or the Bose tonight. I feel better now. Ahhhhhh...

It all packs so nice in the back of my Windstar - BEHIND the third seat.
I put a woof at each side with the pedestal lying flat. (in between)
Then my rack bag sits on top of the pedestal, the kb straddles the woofers and the stand sits on top of that ! It's SO NEAT and compact. I just love it.
(for now, at least !)

Kudos on the Windstar Dave. It's also my gigmobile of choice. Although I'd rather have a new Corvette or a Porche, I don't think my equipment would fit in those.

Gotta love those sliding side doors when your arms are full of stuff!!!!

I've had a van since 1976. I remember in 1980 going on the road for a while and I could barely squeeze all the gear in a full size Chevy van. Organ, Leslie, huge speakers, bass pedals, etc.
Now I could get it in the FRONT seat most nights.
Still, the Aerostar is nice for hauling the bigger gear, and still have four seats. It only has 178,000 miles on it now.
The new Ford minivan looks great. It replaced the Windstar I think.
But I'd rather have a new keyboard.

Oh I forgot to mention, I love not having to step up or squat down to get in and out of the Windstar. You simply slide in and out!! I just drove the star down to Florida and it was like driving in a Cadillac. I'm sure other MV's are similar.

UD what mic are you using for your jobs? Can't tell from the picture and I'm curious about what works good for live situations.

Thanks,

Best value on the market. There is not a better, stronger mic for under $150. Try one, you'll see.

Just switched from a fabulous '01 Windstar to a '04 Honda Odyssey. Huge sunken hole behind the third seat; can hold folded 3rd seat and give me a flat floor all the way up to the captain's chairs or keep it and put all the equipment in the hole - great. The new FreeStar is like that too now, but the prices were way too high for me when I needed to trade leases. Been driving vans since '76 - the Windstar was my first MV - love 'em.
