While I do prefer hardware that doesn't rely on a computer recording directly on a computer works fine and software like Audacity
is available for free so you can't beat the price. The result is no different really if you already have a good quality audio card in your computer.
But I do understand the preference for a stand alone recorder if you are intending to record away from your computer setup. But if I was recording at home then buying a good quality computer audio interface is by far the cheapest option.
