I believe the M1 sound is coupled to the Melody Intelligence. For certain Melody Intelligence settings, you will get a harmony voice added to the Right1 part that is a different voice (instument) than the R1. Some Melody Intelligence parts merely add melodic harmonies of the same R1 voice. Others let you select the M1 voice (such as sax) that layers the harmony with the chosen R1 voice (say, piano).
Then again, I could look in the manual to be sure. But, it's late & I'm tired.

PS: Piano with sax harmony.... sounds like a bad combination!

YouŽll reach the MI tone by pressing two of the instrumentbuttons under the display at the same time. I think it is the drum and bassbuttons. If this doesnŽt work, try two other buttons.

Chalky..Chalky..Chalky EM2000 \ G1000. Regarding changing patch in MI ( Melody Intelligence)
Press MELODY INTELLIGENCE Button so it is lit.
The patch already assigned will show up on the screen in UPPER 1
With the MI button still lit enter a new patch, this patch will now play with UPPER 1 when ever the MI button is activated.

Example You have a Piano in UPPER 1.
Press MI (LED lit) now assign a Guitar to UPPER 1. Guitar will now be assigned it to MI
Now when you press MI you will get a layered Piano & Guitar in whatever Harmony type is selected.

Graham,
Thanks for your reply to my question. Yes i agree doing as you describe changes the voice, but i can't see why we have a MI position on the display when if you change the voice shown by MI nothing changes ! if you see what i mean? And i can't find what the MI display voice refers to!
