First I heard a song that goes something like "I liked you a lot better when I was drinking". Yesterday I heard one on the radio about "Prop me up next to the Juke Box when I die". You country guys just crack me up. I used to think Ray Stevens was funny when he did "Harry the Hairy Ape", but he had nothing on you country guys and gals. Is there no topic absurd enough for a country music song?

Tom,

You have to get out more--those are the good titles--

Cheers,

From what you've been describing Tom I don't think there is.

I don't care too much for the New Country style music. I like the Old Country style a lot better. But regardless of the Style, the themes of many of the songs nowadays and the corresponding Lyrics just goes to show you what lengths people will go to try and sell a song. Even Ray Stevens.

Best regards,
Mike

Ya gotta get your facts straight Tom
"You Ain't Much Fun Since I Quit Drinkin'"
and "Prop Me Up Beside The Jukebox If I Die".
There are many such, but my all time favorite has to be "You're The Reason Our Kids Are Ugly" by Conway Twitty and Loretta Lynn. There is a new version of it out also.

Yep,
You're right Charlie. That's why I'm stickin' with country, big band and old-time rock & roll. Some folks might think the titles are a bit far fetched, but at least every other word is an obscenity. Yep, just "Swinging Doors, A Jukebox & A Barstool" is all I need to fill the dancefloor.

Oh Yeah! 8)

I am not sure exactly how it goes but.... something like " Myy wife says if I go fishing again she's leaving me. Boy I'll miss her ".. I really identify with that one...

Gary, I've added "Swinging Doors" to the song list. You are right it definitely is a keeper. I heard Don do it on his New Years Eve Cd and fell in love with the song and Don's version of it. The only problem I have with it is if I'm doing it in "G" on the phrase "flashing neon sign" I want to go to a Am7 first then resolve it with the D7. It's hard to undo 30 years of Big Band.

Tom

Let's see Don, for you in the key of "E" it would be ...............

Tom, Merle Haggard uses a lot of passing chords when he performs live. I don't think he would mind if you "personalize" his song a little. I do it if F usually, sometimes G.

Here is a weird song: "She thinks my tractor sexy" by Kenny Chesney. Guys might love their tractors but, sexy? I love my chainsaw.

My favorites are "Whiskey For My Men Beer For My Horses" and "I Don't Have To Be Me Till Monday". My son likes country. Every body he went to school with here has at least 2 pairs of cowboy boots. He plays it on the job. Much of it makes me laugh. And like all music today, much of it is down right junk. If you go back before the 50's you can find a few junkie ones, but it takes a while. And I imagine it will get worst. I read in the paper where it looks like the "F" word is coming to TV real soon. How disgusting!

Here's another Country title I like:

"My Tears Have Erased I Love You from The Chalkboard of My Heart."

I think there's a folk song called, "I'll Never Forget What's Her Name." That's a good one.

How about that mid 60's country song by Lorretta Lynn entitled: "You Hung my Wings Upon Your Horns" which includes the below lyric line whose meaning takes on an entirely different interpretation, depending on 'how' those same exact words are 'phrased' by the singer.

Version 1:
You're the first
To ever make me fall in love
And then not take me

Version 2:
You're the first to ever 'make me'
Fall in love
And then not take me

Loretta was able to get away with singing it like the 2nd version (slipping by the country music censors of that era) by claiming her lyric intention was purely innocent (version 1). Yeah, un huh

Johnny Cash's: "Flushed from the bathroom of your heart."
Some of the lyric lines include:
Down the garbage disposal of your dreams, I've beein ground up dear
In the theatre of your love, I lost my part
Now you say you've got me out of your conscience,
I've been flushed from the bathroom of your heart....

it just goes on and on... Check out this link for some great titles:

A Brit told me of a country parody that starts:

She's a count-
She's a count-
She's a country girl

Someone told me that the more "colorful" spelling of that quaint little colloquialism actually has nothing to do with anatomy at all. It is an acronym for:
Can't understand normal thinking.

.....you decide.

Red Hot Women and Ice Cold Beer by New Riders of the Purple Sage. Goes down well with the punters.

If you think the titles and words to
country songs are a riot then what
really scares me is that I can relate to
some of these lyrics.

Born and raised in sweet home Alabama
with the old transistor radio ducted
taped to the handle bars of my spider
bicycle; tuned to a Country Radio
station. Yep, I had no choice but to be
a hardcore country junkie; (where’s Ken
Mellons "Jukebox Junkie" when you need him).

Floyd

PS. I am new to the forum. Just got my
psr 2100 this week. I was a little
concern about what the keys would feel
like but I needed not to worry. Feels
great, sounds great, (maybe there’s a
country song in here somewhere) and I
think I am going to love it. Country,
Gospel, and Old Rock and Roll that’s
what I like.

Thanks Don,
Enjoyed your version of "Welcome to My
World". My mother is up for a visit and she heard
it playing on my computer. She asked, "Is that
someone local"? When I told her where you were
from she went down the hall to my library. I
think she's looking at the road atlas.
