hi,

At least on my Tyros 1 the pads are little rhythm and 'hits' or 'splashes' triggered by four buttons. They are ment to add a little extra

I'm sure others will have a better answer shortly

Play on

A synth "pad" is a sustained sound that is played as part of an accompaniment. It can be anything from strings, brass, choir or even an organ sound... It is different than the other parts of an accompaniment that provide a rhythm i.e. a guitar strum.
Hope this helps you.

Ian

adding my two cents...

"Pad - a gentle, sustaining sound often with a soft attack usually used to play chords in the background of a piece of music."

from A BEGINNER'S GLOSSARY OF SYNTHESIS TERMINOLOGIES http://www.angelfire.com/music/creon/begin.htm
